1971 packs. IMO Topps best year for cards.

The Baseball rack on the left has Reggie Jackson and Willie McCovey showing on the back. Had another first series rack but temptation gave in and I opened it about 6 years ago, got 2 Pete Roses, one graded PSA 8 and the other is PSA 9 OC image

Wow, this is an incredible thread !
You guys , as someone previously posted have some amazing will power to not open at least some of these .

What an enjoyable rip those would be .

Todays rips would not even come remotely close in excitement .

I have to say , Griffins collection though, blows me away !

It is a pleasure just to see it in picture, couldn't imagine being the proud collector .

on the '69 wax tray...cannot recall which series. I know someone had mentioned it sometime ago, but I cannot recall which series. Tempted to say the 1st, but not sure. Excellent and rare piece however.

Hope you all saw my thread on the ripping of the '69 basketball wax pack. Videotaped it and also the eating of the gum!

John- on the '71 rack packs, why do some have the header card and others have 4 pockets of cards?
Assume both racks have 39 cards?
I remember buying these as a kid, and only ever saw them with the header.

    Anthony -

Some of the 71 packs have an actual card as the header card, with a hole punched through it and all. The "4th pocket" is only 1 card.

Maybe Topps ran out of headers?

Now that you say that Bob, it looks like the 1971 Joe Hague card has a hole above where his hands are holding the bat.

Bob is right about the pocket containing a card as a header. Don't know exactly why but my guess is the supplier didn't get them to Topps on time for what ever reason.

Racks from 1970 to 1973 should have 54 cards (3x18).

How the hell do you people collect this stuff and not open it??? I just bought a box of 1975 Topps Wacky packages and the entire box was ripped by midnight.

Late 60's and early to mid 70's non-sports

Don't believe a bit of that explanation. I have an almost complete run of every major 80's set but still keep buying more of that carp just to rip. Even if all my unopened stuff was 70's packs and had the complete sets in all PSA 9 or better, I would have to put them in a safe that I did not know the combination to just to keep them from getting ripped.

Whatever works. When I started my unopened collection, I considered starting with 1973 (year I was born). Now I am scared to buy anything from 73 or 74. My willpower is not strong enough to leave them unopened.

Helps me too, I only get packs from sets I've completed, or close to it.
But at a certain point you realize that you'd gladly part with the sets, but never the packs. They are just so much cooler!

    I second that emotion

Although in my feeble mind all my packs have at least one of the key cards for that year/series image

john, does your pack with the 4th card punched contain 54 or 45 cards?

The 71 racks with the player card as the header card seem to contain fewer cards than the 71 racks with the traditional header card (54 cards).

As I recall, the 69 six-pack wax tray was also from the first series.

    55 cards really;

1st pocket one card with hole, pockets 2, 3 and 4 have 18 cards each
