    If I had to buy only one thing with my money right now it would be food. If two it would be food and ammunition. Precious metals are a bit down the list.

    I collect food and water, and a couple tanks of propane. I could last about 30 days without leaving my house.image

    Have not stated on the ammo yet.image

    I got some platinum too, for now, maybe I can melt them to make ammo? I wonder what platinum bullets would be use for.

    Doesn't platinum have an extremely high melting point that requires special equipment to melt? Lead may be more practical.image

    Platinum is just fugly... very unappealing.

    I actually agree that the PGM's are a great buy at these levels and recently bought my first Platinum coins cosisting of two 2008 1 oz. eagles, five 98-02 1/4 oz. proof eagles and twelve mixed proof and business strike 1/10 oz. eagles. I actually thought that Palladium was a better buy in the $170-$180 range but I couldn't find any and I've already accumulated 190 oz. in the $200 range so it was time for some Platinum.image

    Actually, platinum tipped bullets are used in heavy grain muzzleloaders.

    Very heavy grain as opposed to regular bullets and are used in hunting large game.

    Not to bore anyone here with the details, but they are indeed in regular use.

    All I have is silver right now.
    Might get some gold after the first of the year if gold doesn't go up much between now and then, and if those new high relief gold coins aren't too expensive.

    90% silver may be a good thing to have socked back if the SHTF & our fiat $ $ $ become worthless.

    Platinum is denser than uranium and would probably make an awesome armor piercing bullet...depleted uranium is much cheaper for the military however.

    food is hard to store for long times in versions other than C-rations. The idea of storing bullion is that it can be traded for food, ammunition, and other necessities if currency collapses....

    Ammo is first. If I have that I will just take your food. And your metal while I am at it. Just kidding of course

    ammo is up. Cases 2 weeks ago that were $200 are now $279 if you can find them.

    Not really, that's not quite how it works. The military has no uses for it and it's not from a lack of experimenting. Platinum shatters at super high velocity.

    I explained it earlier in extra heavy grain bullets used for big game. Large loads of lead tend to break up at higher muzzle velocities, hence the platinum tips.

    DU is used in sabot rounds. That would be large rounds, tank and artillery rounds. DU is far denser than platinum. It's not even close. The damage has nothing to do with armor piercing, it's due to the impact that virtually vaporizes it's target.

    A sabot round is much like a piece of solid pipe, no tapered tip. While it's housed in a ballistic round for accuracy, that shatters instantly.

    Incredibly high speed impact is DU's trademark. That sort of impact can literally explode a opposing tank, doesn't need to pierce any armor in the process.

    All of us rednecks are concerned that Obama will limit availability of guns for sale therefore the increase in gun sales before he takes office. Also people want to have something at their disposal should their unemployed neighbors show up unexpectedly in the middle of the night.image

    Ummmm, no.

    Nov 2008 spot :::: Today

    Gold: 750 ::::: 1152
    Silver: 10.25 :::::: 18.65
    Palladium: 230 :::::: 435
    Platinum: 860 :::::: 1614

    So 3 out of the four PM's had almost identical gains, with gold somewhat lagging behind. Turns out you were NOT right afterall.image

    Yes it has doubled in a year but not at its all time high of 2300 then it collapsed to 800. Its a volatile metal. Really don't know how it will do. If we go into a double dip recession watch out. If it ever goes to $800 again I will be buying.

    I disagree. As long as the primary trend remains intact, there is nothing better to have as a store of value AND an insurance against stupidity and calamity. They are always liquid and can always be traded for something less "barbaric".image

    The value of precious metals will always maintain some relativity to other commodities. If paper currencies and vaporware financial derivatives become fairly-valued, you will thank your lucky stars that you have some pms.
