Just found dad's T201's

I just found some T201's that my mother had mistakenly put into an envelope labeled Baseball Coupons.
I'm interested in sending someone the scans to get advice on them.
My dad was born in 1905 and these have been put away for a long time.

The cards are :

Jennings/Summers
Bender/Oldring
Bresnahan/Huggins
Brown/Hofman
Cobb/Crawford
Dygert/Seymour
Gardner/Speaker

I may be interested in selling some of them.

thanks

richard

If you have good clear scans, upload them to photobucket and post them here. You'll get good advice from some guys who know what they're doing, and more advice from others.

I only have one of the T201s and I like it.

  • Nice card....

I will upload the images and open my ears to those that are wiser than I. :-)

  • Thanks HankCaddy. I was going to do that first but followed directions. ;-)

The photobucket site lets you zoom in more I think.

Gotta go coach my BabeRuth Fall Ball team here at 7:30, but will check back later.

(my favorite player is my 6'2" 14 year old, Richie "DownTown" Brown. Maybe he'll go yard tonite.)

Same here, let me know what you would like for them?

    Xbaggypants@yahoo.com

  • Thanks all.

Initial responses? What about the ST on the Cobb/Crawford?

Good grade with qualifier or ?? I can only imagine dad as a kid back in 1910-15 looking at this one and already thinking as a collector of stamps and coins.... I have 1800's stamps I'm looking at too.

Honestly...these have not been touched much if at all in 90+ years. I am an only child and my folks had me at 44 and 57 respectively.
    Blessed to be here. :-)

It would be well worth the time/cost to have them graded. If you choose to keep them they will be protected and if you choose to sell them, you will find it easier and more profitable. Very nice cards (I know very little about that set) and I would have great difficulty in parting with them.

Nice cards. Get them graded first if you plan on selling them.

In my opinion the Cobb/Crawford looks like a PSA 5 ST (I only ever owned about 10 T201's in my life so I am not real reliable when it comes to grading them.)

  • Thanks jimq.
You get first dibs since you were first help. :-)

Which card does everyone like best?

You guys are all great. Good spirit here.

Pick out one card you like and give me an offer offline. I might part with 1 without grading.

You guys sound like you know pretty much how PSA might grade. How good of a scan do you need to feel good about a card?

  • Thanks msassin,

Someone dove in and gave me an opinion. Others?

You won't hurt my feelings and I can't (won't ) argue because I respect you.

I'm very curious what a card that has been stowed away for so long in a folded position is graded at.

I know stock answer there should be "Send it off and find out!" But I wonder if the cost is worth it if expert eyes are already looking at it.

I would think folks would offer SMR - grading cost -10% or so.

eg. the Gardner/Speaker should be in the $800-1500 range. (this is me being brave and trying to spark you all to discussion..) ;-)

    thanks

Thanks Rich, but others showed interest first, so they should get the first shot.

I wouldn't sell them without getting them graded, either by PSA or SGC. I wouldn't consider using other companies for those cards.

There are reprints and counterfeits, so the time and money spent getting them graded is a good investment. If you haven't sent cards for grading, and haven't joined PSA yet, SGC has an $8 monthly special that fits your cards. 7 cards X $8 = $56 plus shipping to get them protected, authenticated, and graded.

Even at $15 each including shipping costs, it's a good added value to help you sell them.
    image

  • Right you are jimq. But they aren't taking that shot.... :-)

I printed out the SGC form and will try to figure out where the cards belong in the grading schedule tonight.

I'll take your good honest advice since it sounds like there's a lot of doubt and mistrust in this world caused by cheats and cons.

And good folks like you all and me have to pay the man to make sure we're all warm and fuzzy. ;-)

    thanks ,
    rich

Now I'm wondering how much it will cost for verifying my dad's 1920 Scott Junior Stamp Collector's book he has mostly filled out. (including the 5's and the pile of 64's I have.) My dad's grandparents were alive when he was in his early teens starting to collect things, so according the the geneaology he drew out, that puts them in there as being born in the '20's .... 1820's that is. I gotta go through the rest of this stuff.
Anybody know anything about postcards and telegrams???

That's odd, mine scans sports cards.

Once you get your dad's cards graded and post the scans, then we will know that you weren't just here on a fishing trip.

  • And starship captains. ;-)

hmmm...fishing for what? Just came here for some advice.

And received that from some very nice folks.

    thanks all,

Rich, there are always skeptics when cards of that type are recently found. The board members usually lean to the side of extreme caution. It's nothing personal, just standard procedure here.
  • Please do yourself the favor of getting them graded. Preferably by PSA. When I found my 22+ - unopened 1957 Topps football cello packs everyone wanted to buy them in the 1990's for $50 a pack. However, talking to several honest dealers they recommend to get them graded. I opened them all carefully and soft plastic sleeved them to preserve them as recommended by a local card dealer except for 2 packs. I had at 1 time 12 Johnny Unitas rookie cards. So, I am glad I did not sell any more unopened packs. That is the best advice any fair, honest person could have given me! Then you can sell them on ebay, keep them, or send them to an auction house! By becoming a member of PSA for 2 years they give you 12 free gradings. Which is worth the two year subscription. Thanks for sharing your story.

    Good luck,
    John

  • Yeah, fattymacs. Understood.

It was just the atypical tone that struck me in the comments.

    Bresnahan/Huggins

    Cobb/Crawford

    Gardner/Speaker

Got them all eyeballed by a knowledgeable collector when in Seattle last week.

The other 3 still in hand until I get my freebies from PSA.

Will advise upon their return....if anyone interested.

Dougherty/Lord was only printed at 1 factory (the rest 2) so it's a bit more desireable than the other commons. You might consider getting that one graded as well.
You may well get hammered by the technical grades on these, due to the folds. In some cases it may be better to sell them raw.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • Raw or graded they are still sweet cards, almost wants me to start collecting them.
  • When you say pile of 64s, is that Topps baseball cards or stamps or what? Just wondering since I'm trying to build the '64 Topps baseball set.

  • Yeah Griffins. Some have mentioned the folds to me but there is an article (on PSA I think) that suggests that the folds are accepted more by graders as they were the first designed to work that way and were expected to be folded. Guess I'll find out soon huh?
Nobody here wanted em "raw" anyway.... :-)

The good (and maybe bad) thing about the cards I have in hand are they have been folded shut since probably 1915-20 or so as pop put em away.

Just got my PSA welcome pack in yesterday. Came in fast. Guess I can send the Bender/Oldring, Summers/Jennings, and the Brown Hofman in on the vouchers. Maybe I should wait to see the verdict on the first 3.

    Happy Thanksgivng all.

That is true. They just all need to be of the same category. If you send tall boys, they all need to be tall boys.

    Nice stuff RichHistory
SMR is hardly updated. Most things not for years. It doesnt not take into account for high pop grades vs low pop grades. VCP pricing gives actual sales. VCP will give you an idea what you can expect to actually sell the card for. I wish I had the money right now cuz i would make you an offer on them. Unfortunately its not in the near future for me. Good luck on your sales!
