Economic down turn and the coin market?

Hi guys! I have been offline for along time. I just got my login and password updated. I'm looking forward to catching up on the message boards.

So what do you think about coin prices? Going up? Go down? Sell? Buy?

This just came to me from Heritage. More than anyone on this board, THEY are in the position to give real world information, rather than speculation. so, for everyones benefit......

I am writing to you because Heritage is in the best position to buy your coins and currency. The numismatic market is extremely strong right now, and your financial plans may require converting some (or all) of your coins or notes to cash.

Our September 2008 Long Beach auctions realized $35 million, and our recent Dallas auction realized nearly $13 million, the finest results for a Dallas auction in several years. We have already surpassed $50 million in consignments for a magnificent FUN auction in January. Of course, we also just set the record for the most valuable ANA auction ever, at $40 million. Heritage's auctions are so popular that our clients sometimes forget they can also sell their coins and notes directly to us.
We are reminded constantly, because we have clients with want-lists exceeding $350 million, clamoring to buy coins and notes. Every month, we need to spend $10-$15 million just to keep pace with the added demand — in fact, this year our registered demand grew by $50 million despite our highest sales in history. Our 600,000 collector clients are spending more dollars with us than ever before, and they want to spend even more!

We have all seen the headlines about economic uncertainties on Wall Street and Main Street, but thankfully, the coin market continues strong, and Long Beach amply demonstrated that collectors are still very excited about numismatic items. For more information about collectibles in the current market, click here. Our current client demand is the key to your selling success; because our clients want more, we have to pay more for what we buy. This may be your optimal time to sell — when demand is strongest. Please call today for a frank discussion about these opportunities, whether you are thinking about selling outright to Heritage or through one of our upcoming auctions. The choice is yours, and fortunately, this strong and vibrant market makes both choices very enticing. Together, we can ascertain your best course of action.

    Sincerely,

    Dennis Nowicki

    Hi dpoole!

I have been out of coin collecting for a couple years. But I still have ton of coins in the safe and at the bank. Trying to get feel for the market and coin prices. I have no idea how much my collection is worth.

I guess I'm getting old, because even Merc's (fishing lures) are starting to look good. I might just buy some!

It's good to see you again.

I haven't heard much complaining about prices and am sure they haven't crashed.

It might not be a good time to sell really common stuff except for beginner types of coins though.
