I didn't even notice the toning spot until you mentioned.

Dumb question - if it bothered you, why did you buy the coin?

I did not notice the spot, either. How conspicuous is it in hand?

For personal reasons, it is my favorite date in the series. image

I noticed the hit on the cheek before I noticed the toning.

Its not that bad ... This is graded a cameo ( just barely with this reverse ) and this finishes
my 1883 proof set with all coins in cameo.

The amount I paid for the grade would determine how much it bothered me. The black areas on the rev bothers me more.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Its not that bad but it was probably the deterring factor of it only being a 65 image

Well it wouldn't bother me a whole lot because as others said, the obv spot is barely noticable. Not like it's a fingerprint. image

Between this thread and the one on the NGC boards, I suspect the coin is failing to satisfy you as much as you would like.

I am not bowled over but wasn't somewhat unexpected. I will keep my eyes open in the mean time but in a collecting point of view
I consider this set basically done with all coins being cameo designated. The Cameo on this one kind of matches one other cameo coin in the set so it will not stick out like a sore thumb image

Its to the bank vault for now. If something comes up in the future I will not NOT look at it ... plus I have 'he who must not be named'
looking for a higher graded cameo for the Quarter.

For now the question is "are we done" ... Yes we are done image

Thanks for you input on BOTH sides Tom

Yeah, I didn't really notice the toning spot either...

I like the toning on the reverse image

Me thinks you are being tough on yourself. Looks great to me and exactly what I would expect. Very attractive coin.image Over time you may change your opinion or not. image

Nice coin and the spot doesn't detract from the eye appeal. From your response however you were plugging a hole (in a very very nice set mind you) instead of buying the coin because it jazzed you. For me the coin would be a box coin but your taste and budget are apparently higher than mine. Anyway I hope the coin is exactly what you want to keep but if not there's always another coin out there. Congrats on finishing your killer 83 set! Very nice.

I think if you are questioning it now, you will question it later image

Wait for another one to come along and upgrade it to one you are comfortable with image

    Awesome set though!

If you are OCD, you will never be happy with it... if you are a collector, and interested in coins, it would be just fine. Cheers, RickO

There's a hit on the cheek ? Looks like I need new glasses - I didn't see the hit - or the toning spot.

    Pretty enough coin though.

OCD is more of a quantity thing and not a quality thing for me - I have it -
I have been through hell the last few years addresing it and other issues but thats not a story for here .

The complete SAC PROOF and Biz sets and SBA Proof and BIZ sets I sold went to help pay for this coin thus pruning my OCD dollar collection down to a more reasonable prioritized set of coins - MORGANS - woo hoo

I still need to downsize some but I am getting there image

I am OFFENDED that you catagorize a person that has OCD as NOT being able to be a collector of quality

That "spot" was pretty obvious in the Lot photo's.

I was kinda surprised at the Heritage photo as well and judging from your photo, don;t really see any significant problems with the coin.

Coin collecting is one of God's gifts to those with OCD. Organizing, categorizing, inventorying, grading, arranging, admiring. And all in a hobby that is socially acceptible and can even be profitable.
