How best to get coins into circulation so that a YN finds them...

In the past, i've pulled a handful of coins out of circulation to put into my Dansco Albums. I think that nickels are my favorite, as they seem to wear very well and you can find quite old ones as the Jefferson design has not changed for some time and they all look pretty identical unlike the layered clad coins.

Each time I found an old coin in circulation, it gave me a small amount of pleasure and some wonderment as to how many things that coin has helped purchase in the past.

As I find myself upgrading coins in my Dansco, I find myself with a small collection of these pulled-from-circulation coins. I don't really want them; they are not really valuable. But I do remember the joy I got by finding them long ago, and I would expect that someone out there would also like to find a coin like this in circulation.

But I got more pleasure when I was younger. Apparently, I get numb as I get old. Or jaded. Whatever.

Anyway...

Where is the best place to spend coins like this so that I might maximize the chance for the coin to be found by a Young Numismatist?

I think a Bad Example would be a vending machine, as the folks that empty these machines are on the 'professional side' of change searching and would also probably not care much for the coins I am putting into circulation. A CoinStar machine would be the worst example, probably. Straight to the bank. Or is that bad? Perhaps it would make the outcome totally random?

A Good Example might be a local quickie mart where I know that kids buy candy.

Any other Good Examples as to where I might spend my change to that a Young Numismatist might happily run into it someday?

(Yeah, i'm not working today)

  • Find out where they hang out after school. My town still has a local drug store with a soda fountain so that would be a great place to spend spare change that would probably end up in YN's hands.

Fast food places are good as well.

I like garsmiths idea. Why not hand them out here on the boards? Make a bst and any YN who can prove that they are a certain age, you can send them something?

I toss dateless Buffalo Nickels & replated steel cents in the playground sandlots at schools and parks.

Well, thanks for all of the interesting suggestions. I'm mainly looking to surprise someone who is searching change. But the playground idea is interesting. The ice cream vendor is interesting too. I suppose I could BST these, but they all came from circulation so they are really worth nothing; not worth the postage to send. Yet I remember getting plenty of enjoyment seeing a nickel from 1946 coming to me in change. More enjoyment than the coin was worth; it ought to be illegal!

I was able to slip Golden Dollars into most of the kids halloween baskets without them knowing about it. I think that will generate a very high percentage of interest. The one group that 'made' me...caught me giving them dollar coins...they were all in a quandry... "Wow, what is that!" "It's a dollar!" "Is it real?" "Wow, neat!". I denied everything.

That is an even better idea than I had with the buffalo nickels in envelopes taped to candy bars. Nice job.
