Before a new coin design is released to the public do they do wear tests
to see how it would look after years of circulation?

Has there ever been a coin that once worn has become embarassing
for some reason or some other unintended consequence that was
unforseen due to wear patterns?

I imagine the only example I can dream up would be how some coins
and their designs would have the date worn off way before the other
details would be lost. Buff nickels are a great example. But that is
hardly embarrassing in any fashion.. just not the norm for most other
coins.

I think the Wyoming state quarter will look like a blank planchet on the reverse after a few years...

There are some world coins that get frightful as they wear. So yes, there
can be unforseen problems with designs. Unforseen because I doubt very
many designs have ever been tested in history and it's not a major consid-
eration for many of the artists.
