New purchase:1873-CC quarter.

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,632 ✭✭✭✭✭
Here is the nicer example of two 1873-CC Arr. quarters I bought 2 weeks ago. There are a few light hairlines and slide marks, but it is relatively problem-free as these come.

Historically, the 1873-CC was considered more valuable than the 1870-CC or 1871-CC, at least according to my 1964 Red Book. It is interesting how perceptions of key dates can change over the years.

The redbook also listed the 1873 CC dime over the 1874.

What has happened over the years is coins surface, but that takes nothing away from a really, really nice looking 1873 CC.

    Well done and congrats.

Wow, now that's a monster coin, and the fact that the collection had 2, just blows my mind.

This coin has the super crust that many like and aside from the light slide marks, it's original.

There is also a small, old scratch through the shield I forgot to mention. Probably not bad enough to get it bagged at PCGS, though, as I am sure they are happy to certify examples of this rare date when they show up.

I don't think 1874-cc dimes and 1870-cc quarters were ever available, even in the 1940's to 1960's. When I started recording appearances of these in detail in 1974, it was quite apparent that the 73cc WA coins were far more available than other CC dimes and quarters. In fact the 74-cc almost never showed up for sale and for every one of those, a couple of 73-cc's would show up. It was never about the actual rarity but just the perception that the arrows coins were better for some reason.
