Wow! Nice auction price on toned Franklin

Nice auction Martin

I was watching this and had NO CLUE it would go as high as it did. From just over a hundred with a minute left to $180+ with 3 seconds to the closing price of $238.50 with 1 second to go. Wow!

Very nice coin, and the lines appear to be full, at least from here..

Whats up with the NGC insert? I can say I have never seen that particular insert, have you?

No, he said it is one of their newer ones, in the desc, but I hadn't seen it either.

I feel like a retard right now. I sold this coin to Martin for $40 + shipping raw, on ebay with crappy pics. As I purchased raw at a local coin show for $25. So.... Whatever....

I don't think its a 65 either. And its not FBL. You would have to see it in hand.

Slabs mean money but good pictures mean money too.
I would have bought it for $40 image

To bad the pics are juiced and it doesn't look that nice in hand, IMO

Do you have your previous pics? Would love to see them.

He has a lot of other coins for sale...are you saying his photos are juiced? The other rainbow/toned coins?

I can't speak for this one, since I haven't seen it in hand, and I am not the one you directed your question to, but I have bought a couple from Martin and they do look like the pics....the trick is the lighting and angle, at least for the ones I bought. I have not been upset or disappointed in the few I have purchased from him....both raw and slabbed.

Nice coin, I had my eye on that as well...but just a bit out of my price range with that ending price.

Ben looks like he was in a knife fight and lost big time!! 64 at PCGS tops imho. The obverse pic looks totally juiced on my computer .....maybe it's just my puter.

You can tell that most of the sellers pics are juiced up. But its with his intentions to help show the toning on the coin, and not to deceive. As the sellers photography skills are less than par, so he tries to show the buyer what the coin will look like in hand with a little help from his computer. image I have purchased from him before too and was happy with the transaction. And he has purchased from me and always has been great to work with. I have mentioned to Martin that he needs to invest in a new camera, but with these recent auctions... I guess he's doing quite alright as is. image

I liked his 54 s 66* alot. Its a shame that I don't trust the photography because alot of his coins look pretty nice.

I got outbid on that sucker. I kinda feel bad for the winner cause I bid 236 with a second to go, pushing his price to 238.5 from 180. Can't put my finger on it, I just really, really liked that coin. Oh well.

Trust me, you should be happy you didn't win at that price! image I wouldn't grade it a 65, and the toning isn't that nice. But to each his own!

  • This is NGC's newest holder design.

Looks like Rick Tomaska was the winner. You can bet your lucky stars 1955 Frankies with nice color are almost unheard of. The closing price doesn't surprise me. As to the grade, it is near impossible to make a determination. As to the seller's pictures, he has been discussed before on this coin forum and is a member of this coin forum and I imagine he'll be along shortly to defend himself.

  • Im not a Franklin collector, but I have never seen a coin with that many digs in a prime focal area (cheek) ever be called a "gem". Thats basically a $40 coin with some decent color. Not worth more than $100 if its coming out of MY pocket.
  • I don't see anything that would knock this coin out of 65. And it looks FBL by PCGS standards, but not NGC.

And yes I agree that there is likely a little juicing going on in Martins pix. It is pretty obvious. But anybody that has tried to get the true colors to show on toners knows that is practically a necessary evil. Otherwise the seller is just cutting himself short due to the nature of photographing such coins.

Even very experienced coin shooters (think Greattoning) are apt to use a bit o' juice. Only the true masters (think Mark Goodman) have the skills and equipment to accurately portray colors w/o the slider.

I like toners, but I'm always wary of anyone who juices their photos to the degree that this seller does. None of the pics for any of his coins look natural, and that sets off huge warning flags to me.
