Latest purchase and first shots with new camera
I recently bought a Nikon D60 from Pinealbany on the BST boards (thanks Dude!) and I thought I'd try it out on my lastest purchase, a Grant commemorative. Mark's book has helped a lot but I have a ways to go. What do you all think?

Thanks,
JH

Does being a fiancial whiz with dollars make one an expert with gold?
The picture looks great! Now I think you need to learn how to crop a circle and then drop it into one of SpaceMonkey's photoshop templates!

Just wonderful shots and coin, Eagleguy!!!
What was your lighting source??
GB
I wonder if you adjusted the contrast up as the face is so bright
perhaps it's a lighting issue, how many lights did you use?
<< <i>Was this the same beatiful Grant from Polaris on the BST? Nice!
I think so that and the Vancouver where/are wonderful examples!
<< <i>Great pic, what lens and lights? >>
Yes what lens did you slap on that D60 and lights as those are some great images!!!
How about a pic of your set up too ?

I collect all 20th century series except gold including those series that ended there.
I used Pinealbany's D60 with 180mm Tamaron lens. My setup is simple and almost too embarrasing to photgraph - I laid the coin on a piece of white foam board on the floor underneath a (really weak) tripod which was next to my computer table and then used a single gooseneck lamp with a GE reveal bulb. The lamp has a spring clip that I attached to the desk and I positioned the lamp right next to the lens looking downward. I used the foam board to detect the white balance before the shot was taken and I believe the camera was set to P (auto f-stop, auto exposure, etc). The picture is not processed in any way except for re-sizing and cropping. What you didn't see was the other 25 or so blurry images I took before I got these two right. The tripod is too weak for the camera and lens and my finger on the button tended to shake the camera. First thing I have to do is get a better tripod and a remote for the camera. The second thing I want to do is get a second lamp. Some of the other photos I took had an uneven lighting look to them.
I have larger (3MB) photos but, as I said I had computer issues yesterday, and I can't access imageshack from work so I can't post them yet. I have a shortcut to Space Monkey's templates but that will be a whole different exercise. Thanks to Newbiecollector for the merged image! I may need better editing software to pull something like that off.
Yes, the coin was from Polaris. It is a monster 65 that, as everybody noticed, that makes it that much easier to photograph. I took a bunch of photos of the rest of my commemorative collection over the weekend but these came out the best and too many of the others were blurred.
Thanks again for all the comments and questions. I even got Mark's approval which means a lot!

Excellent pics, beautiful piece, I'm sure the coin in hand looks the same. Does your camera have a timer? This would eliminate any shaking.
My Fuji S700 has a 2 second, and 10 second timer, check out your users manual.
Keep up the good work,
Scott
And like others have said, a timer should resolve your shaking issues.
Your pictures looks great to me
You managed to capture both luster and color. Not bad for your first pics with a new camera.
