Help please! Spanish silver colonials 1780- 1819

I am going to look at about 12 of these tomorrow for potentional purchase. Does anyone here have any information on them, online preferably?

I'm trying to find out 1)How to distinguish fakes, 2) price ranges, and 3) more general information on them.

I posted it here because many of these spanish silver coins circulated though the colonies before and during official US coinage.

First of all, you should know in what country in the Spanish New World they were minted. Ie., if they were minted in Mexico, that's where I would start. Some of the early 19th Century 4 and 8 real coins are worth some money. I don't know much else about them.

    "Seu cabra da peste,
    "Sou Mangueira......."

  • Below is a pic of an 8 Reales from Mexico that I got in a large bucket of foreign coins. Some forum members here did not like the looks of the 9, but after some reserach the 9 on all of them looks a little funky. I guess that how they were made. I still dont know the value of these and no one here really had an answer for me either. Any information on value would be helpful. Let us know how you make out.

    To answer your question:

    1) Consider posting this in the world coin forum as well.

    2) Notre Dam Site

    3) If you have a login, you can browse through the Heritage archives for pricing and other info. Link

    4) The Red Book has a nice summary and price suggestion on pages 10-11 (2009 edition).
