2008 W Platinum Eagles - Who is sending them in for grading?

Many of us here have by now ordered both the UNC and Proof 2008 W Platinum Eagles. What are you guys sending in for grading, to which grading service, and why?

  • I needed one for my type set, as long as it looks like it would go at least 69, I will sent it to PCGS because of that. I bought one of the uncirc 1/4's.

A platinum PCGS MS69 is worth less then one in OGP IMHO. Why go to the extra expense of grading?

I am tracking Plats in Excel, and the OGP price is not always worth more than PCGS-69. Right now, with platinum jumping around the way that it is, prices are all over the map. I've seen MS-70's go for less than the same coin in MS-69, both graded by PCGS.

In Plats especially, the market is fluid and it is very inefficient. It makes for opportunity and it creates risk. I suppose that's why you are seeing mostly fixed-price offerings on ebay, instead of the true auction format.

It seems to me that the Plat market will remain very volatile as long as bullion prices are moving so quickly. And that promises to be for a long time.

As far as the OP, if you're into a PCGS-only collection, then I'd certainly send them in to PCGS.

My 1/10 oz proof and W unc coins will stay in the original packaging where they have been for a few months now.....

They will also sit right on top of my 2007 1/10 oz coins as well.....

I am sending one to pcgs I think is a 70. If it comes back lower and ogp is worth more when I decide to sell I can always crack it out and put it back in the mint box.
  • Maybe I should have also asked:

How many of you will be sending them back because of a shortage of cash in your accounts due to the stock market crash and margin calls?

I'm considering in returning my proofs ( not 70's by PCGS standards ), if the plat. PM continue in their free fall.

It looks like the prices for Pt and Au may soon intersect.
If they join Ag (which I hope not) we may end up in a PM Bermuda Triangle.

    jmski52 - a fellow plat lover I see.

Just curious though, can you cite a "69" going on any regular basis for above an OGP piece? For any date?
The 69ers seem like rejects in the numbers game as few of the proofs I have seen grade less than 69 & it is almost a basal state.
