Carson City Morgan Certificate Question

Hi everyone!

I have a question on CC Morgan GSA holder certificate..I have an 1884 CC but the certificate number starts out 82 instead of 84. My Dad said he bought it straight from the Mint back when they had the auction for Morgan's..

Can this be correct? Has anyone else had this issue?

Thank you,
Chuck.

Nope, should be a certificate with the 84 beginning. He probably bought several and just didn't realize
that he got them mixed up.
That's the way I see it!
How about a pic of the CC?

Probably someone had a group of them and mixed the certificates when they closed them up in their boxes again. Any GSA dollars I have seen matched up on the year.
Some one might have had a GSA dollar without the certificate, but saved one from a high grade dollar of a different year that was sent off to be slabbed. They might have used that cert. to have something to go with the one they had without a cert.even though it was a different year.
Just a couple of theories on how that could happen.

    IMHO MS63

That's a nice 64 if the reverse is as nice!

Here's the reverse..That particle on the left side is just that, a particle from the holder.. Whatta think? Should I send it in to grade?

  • Do you really think 64??? I think those divots on and below the cheek will limit it. The reverse looks great.

With all the scuffs and marks on Liberty's face, MS63 at best even considering the grading serices make allowances for marks on CC coins.

I'm also in the solid MS63 camp, just a bit to much chatter in the prime focal area - nice otherwise tough.
    Best wishes,

No better than a 63 ... I would keep it in the GSA holder & buy a 84 COA of eBay....It's a common date & readily available graded.

"Should I send it in to grade?"

If you do, send it in to NGC (they leave them in the GSA slab).
