What separates proof Morgans from business strikes?

I was just curious when trying to tell if a Mrgan is a proof or business strike what is looked at? Are the specific distinguishing marks or characteristics? I don't have any proofs but sure want one someday and was just curious on the differences.

The Whitman book Guide book for Morgan Dollars by Q. David Bowers will give you plenty to read on the subject of proofs as well as other interesting facts.

Ultra-square denticles, knife-sharp rims, a full strike, and lettering that looks like it was precision-cut are some of the big tipoffs for me. The overall "look" of the coin is where I get my first idea, though. Many proofs are still toned a dark violet/purple/hazy smoke color, as opposed to DMPLs which have often been dipped, and that's another clue.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Strike, dentils.....surface.....rims......sorry not very specific I know but a nice squared off rim and a nice full strike

My own observations: Proof mirrors are generally smoother than DMPL's. DMPL's tend to show some luster in the fields under lights. Proofs not so much.

I should have said that neither of those Morgans I posted earlier are mine. Sorry for any confusion image

    Wish they were though...
