What good is it to leave a non-original medal* in plastic? I couldn't stand it any more, so I scissored it out.

These are beautiful...originals, restrikes, slabbed or raw. They are all cool. image
  • I freed both my silver and bronze libertas medal shortly after i recieved them.. Soft pliable plastic like that worries me. Usually PVC is added to plastic to make it soft.

Ditto. I took mine with me to Philadelphia. For no reason really, just felt like taking it to where its concept was probably born.

I don't even know if NCS would do so- holder in an oversized slab like NGC does, but I decided even if they do I like the idea of keeping it out of plastic. Like yours, they're fun to handle!

  • jmski you can get the cousin coins on ebay pretty cheap.
The US Mint restruck the First Medals of American in the '70's
The complete set of ten can be had for under $30 on ebay and even less if you are quick to snipe auctions. It comes with a nice booklet describing the history of each medal. They sell as singles also but the separate shipping adds to cost.
They could not restrike the Libertas medal with the set as it was struck in France. I had to shell out real money for the Paris Mint restrike.
I bought two sets so I could display the obverse and reverse.
Go for the set as the book that comes with it is a good read and a wealth of information on the subject.

How much are the modern-day Paris Mint restrikes worth?

    The bronze?

    The silver?

  • jmski52jmski52 Posts: 23,477 ✭✭✭✭✭
The bronze medals sold from Talisman for $49.95, and the silver ones for $119.95.

I believe that they are now sold out, and the prices may be more or less now. I haven't tracked the prices.

But even more important, on of my silver ones is free now too!!!!!

Pistareen sold me a silver one, in a PCGS holder, for $75. But I do not think he has anymore at that price image

Here is the original post that came out shortly after Talisman made them available. Unfortunately, a lot of the scans are no longer available.

The Talisman Libertas Americana is the only medal I own and I really like them a lot. Mine are still in the plastic so maybe I should get them out. I was interested to see if any are selling on ebay and could only find one talisman, but there are dozens of others from China, and various mints. I didn't know that NGC was grading and holdering them.

What are these things selling for these days?

I bought one of each Silver & Bronze in 2006 - they live in a nice cherry frame that hangs over my desk, so I can be inspired by them every day - I am just curious as to current value.

There is a market for these medals. I've recently sold one of each for about double what I had paid. Prior to that, I sold a bronze to Ciccio on BST for about 1.5X the original cost.

    I don't think I'll be selling the remaining ones I have.image

I just tracked the sale of a 1983 Paris Mint issue on ebay last week that weighed 7.6 oz (unknown fineness) for $472.00.
