What happened to the food issues?

I grew up in the 1980's, so I remember going to the grocery store and getting all excited about buying cereal just to get baseball cards. I also remember buying Mac and Cheese just to be able to cut off the baseball cards. I would love for me and my son to be able to do that today.

I remember one of the first baseball cards that I ever owned was a 1983 Kelloggs George Hendrick. Those were the days.

I wonder why there are no food issues any more? I say bring them back!

I concur...though, I haven't finished collecting all the ones that already exist for my PC.

One of the first cards I remember having was a 1984 Topps Cereal Series Ted Simmons.
I took a pair of finger-nail clippers and rounded a couple of the corners.
    Still have it.

I laughed at this post because I am in the process of going through old boxes of cards trying to sort them out to finally figure out what (if anything I have in my old boxes). (Would you believe I found what I *think* is an S74 silk? I vaguely remember having it as a kid...but it's been in this box for...25 years and I can't remember much about it) -- at any rate...

...I keep seeing all these oddballs and remember getting a card from a box of this, or a box of that -- cutting cards off boxes, etc (+2 cards I can't identify...yet...)...

just made me laugh because I was wondering the same thing...
  • as a kid i didnt care about the cards; i just wanted the hostess cupcakes and twinkies!

I don't really collect any more, but I've always had a fondness for the good issues. The early Bazookas, Milk Duds, Kellogs, and later Krafts' Mac & Cheese. Even some of the later issues like the Cracker Jacks of the 90s, Seven-Eleven coins, Mother's Cookies, Wonder Bread, Hostess, Drakes,... All good stuff.
  • The food issues were always some of the cooler cards. When the Kraft cards came out I bought over 200 boxes. My aunt talked me into opening them and giving her all the contents and for the longest time used the cheese on popcorn and the macaroni in her cooking. In the early 90s King-B had me buying shredded beef jerky. Always like the 80s Kellogg's cards, but I more remember then from complete sets on dealer tables. Now, all we get is Wheaties boxes it seems.

I still have unopened Kraft boxes from 1987 with Ripken on the back (no change in 20 plus years)

I wonder if they stopped putting cards on cereal and other food boxes
because people were cutting them off without purchasing them first?

The decrease is likely due to the benefit/cost ratio going down for the companies which produce the cereal and other food products. The fees they have to pay to MLB & the Player's Assn. have gone up and they just don't get the bump in sales to justify the expense.

I have never heard of anything like that....nor do I think the food companies care about such. IF, and that is a big if, such did happen, how would it even matter to say Kraft. Kraft made its money before the item left their factory. That would be a Kroger concern.

Few years back there was Nascar cards on packages of sticks of better. On sale for .50 a package !!

The other day my wife bought a box of crackers? and there is a chance to win a auto fb card.

Helmars still has a great selection of memorabilia. They are a potato chip company. I think maybe beer or soda also. Check some of their stuff out. It is first rate.

  • Order a pizza and tell them you'll tip an extra $2 if can bring a pack of cards

A lot of gas stations around here give out pro and college schedules with players on them that would be similar to cards

Most food products have gone more toward TV and movies than sports. I saw a few Dora the Explorer and Indiana Jones cards in the grocery store recently

Miller and Coors products had NFL players on them for a while

NASCAR is everywhere think I saw it on a soda bottle recently
