Any idea just how scarce/rare the 1999 Silver panda BU coin is with large date/underlined "1&qu

I realize that this topic is so obscure that even many panda "experts" would only have an educated guess. But I wanted to toss it out there and see if anyone cares to chime in. There are 3 distinct varieties for the 1999 silver panda in UNC.

small date------seems to be by far the most commonly available

large date/plain "1"---This variety as of late has been widely differentiated from the small date and commands a significant premium

large date/underlined "1"----I have seen just one of these offered on ebay (bought it yesterday at a heavy premium), and havent seen another anywhere.

Large date/underlined "1"

Large date/plain "1"

Small date

  • Wish I could help, but I had to look for a looooong time to even figure out the difference between the underlined and the plain version.

    Hey gecko109,

    Congratulations on that.

Thanks for pointing that out. I often wondered what the difference was between the two large dates.
I believe that variety is also known as " Large Date crosslet/serif 1-Very hard to find.

Now I got to have one.

It appears that NGC doesn't acknowledge the variety difference.

  • Just got another 1999 large date serif "1" in the mail today. Man, I love these things. The strike is such that you would swear the coin was from proof dies, and thats saying ALOT considering most business strike silver pandas have proof-like characteristics. This coin is truly an outstanding specimen!
