(: Colonial Era - 1723/2 Hibernia Halfpenny :)

when browsing I gennerally look at the coins first... never the descriptions, grades or otherwise... for the LOOK is the most important thing for me... if it does not catch my eye I usually could careless about the rarity or whatever.

Well... this one grabbed me the very second that i saw it... I was immediately drawn to the strike on the Reverse. Funny enough I really do not know much about the issue but have seen a bunch here and there and never ever saw one with such an incredible strike. As I read the description I was pleasantly surprised to see I was not incorrect about that feeling! So I thought about it for several days... back to the CRO web site several times a day just to make sure it really grabbed me... well I guess it did because I am now holding it in my hands... It is simply elegant and enchanting!

    Very nice looking piece.
Having seen the variety listed in the Red Book I didn't realize the overdate was so prominent.
Very nice strike on a very nice variety.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

Hibernia was the Roman name for Ireland.

According to the red book... these coins were to circulate in Ireland but were unpopular and thus some were brought to the US as the colonies were in need of currency.

This coin appears to be rather well-struck for the issue. Even the denticles are sharply delineated. I have owned a similar Hibernia piece before, but yours appears to be nicer. It looks like a great addition to your Colonials!

That's a fantastic coin. Beautiful images too.

Funny, the large photo of the reverse makes me think of Edward Scissor Hands or Freddy Kruger.

But for 1723, I'd say that's a wonderful bit of work!

    Cheers,

thanks... I keep refining... i like adding a touch of color to highlight the coin... I think it helps give it depth.

  • another nice addition, that reverse is spectacular.

For those interested; here is a link to a well written article regarding the assimilation of Wood's coinage on the Island as well as the Colonies.
