Home PCGS Set Registry Forum

Crossover Question for the experts.

Greetings,
As a newbe to the forum, I have a few questions. First, I'm working on my registry set of proof morgans. Current composition of my collection is as follows.
PCGS graded coins 45%
NGC graded coins 45%
ANACS and IGC 10%

I just sent in the ANACS coins to be crossed. But I'm wondering about the NGC. Anybody have any experence with crossing NGC to PCGS? The last thing I want to see is a coin take a 1 grade hit. A 65 proof morgan is worth a lot more in a NGC 65 than a PCGS 64. I can set minimum grades but then I waste $30 a coin if they don't cross. So how about it, what it the percentage of NCGs that will cross???

If I get everything crossed the set have only 1 missing (not the 95)...

Thanks
Marty

  • I shot a 40% rate with NGC crossovers The most interesting DNC (Did not cross) was a 1911D quarter eagle. NGC said it was a MS61, PCGS said AU58. (BIG swing in $$$$). Those that did cross came at the same grade and color, nothing was higher.

An ANACS copper that I had (in MS, semi-key date) I cracked out and it came back in a body bag with questionable color/toning.
  • I think I am about %40 with NGC cross overs. And I didn't try to cross everything, just the better stuff. For proof Morgans I'd set the minimum and risk losing the $30 grading fee.

I sent the ANACS in willing to take the hit, most of them are lower grade proofs (61-63) that I'm waiting to upgrade, But the NGC are 65-66 Cams and Dcams. I guess I can send them in and see. When the ANACS came back in a few weeks I'll let everyone know what they went for. How is PCGS on grading toned coins, the ANACS were all toned. None came back from ANACS as being questionable, just wondering...

Don't crack them out and all you risk is the grading fees. You might consider getting a second opinion from a trusted dealer to improve your batting average.

There is no way I'm going to crack the 65s and 66s out. If worse comes to worse, I can sell them and wait for a PCGS coin to come along. I have most of the heavy hitters in PCGS. Just want to fill out the rest of the regestry.

It sounds like you have some great coins! Why you would want to sell them when a PCGS coin comes along is beyond me. If the coin is nice then who cares what slab it is in?

You should expect a 33% crossover rate for NGC. If the coins are high valued like yours, then expect a worse crossover rate.

Forget about crossing ICG coins usless you're willing to take a 1-3 point grade hit. They overgrade way too much.

I've had fairly good luck crossing ANACS coins. I guess that PCGS/NGC doesn't consider them a threat and they'll give the coin a fair shake.

PCGS is bïtchy on toning. If it's colorful toning, it better look 100% original or they'll bodybag it in a second.

After years of collecting I'm one away from a complete set of Proof Morgans. I though putting them in a registery set would really be nice. Here in the midwest, NGC and PCGS are both strong, I know on the west coast PCGS is much stronger. Just though it would real nice to see how I stacked up against some other collections...

  • Is PCGS stronger on the West coast than the East coast? I wouldn't think it is like circulating coinage where P's and D's are seperated. If this is so, I would say Florida is confused right now with several grading companies.

Keep it a secret, but they seem to be a little more lenient when you send them in as a registry set crossover.

I figure I'll use the 5 free when the coins I sent in already come back. Out of the 17 I sent in I'm sure a number of those will be returned. Then it's time for hey guys I NEED these for my great PCGS registry set...

Why bother crossing them at all. Get the ANACS coins crossed to either PCGS or NGC and submit the set to the NGC registry. I think their registry is going to take off and one of the main reasons is the situation you're facing. It just doesn't make sense (IMHO) to go through the time, expense and probable disappointment submitting your NGC coins for crossover to PCGS. NGC is just getting their registry up and running but my guess is in six months to a year they'll have as many if not more sets than what's in the PCGS registry.

The problem I have with a NGC registery is the same problem with PCGS, Half the coins are in PCGS holders and half are in NGC. I sent all the ANACS in to cross (let's see how many 1 grade hits I take). I sent the NGC slabs in yesterday, to cross only if equal. Even if 40% cross that will leave me with 7 coins in NGC holders. But a 75% done registery. I guess we will see in a few weeks when they start coming back.

MadMarty, The NGC Registry takes BOTH PCGS and NGC coins! Cross the ANACS coins to PCGS...... anything that comes back... send to NGC. You might have a couple that won't make into PCGS or NGC slabs.... just sell them and buy a PCGS or NGC coins.

I went to the NGC registry page, I have problems entering coins here from work. I get a connection refused (might have to do with the firewall). I'm going to enter the coins I have in PCGS and NGC. Most of the ANACS should cross and what dosn't I'd want to replace anyway. Just tring to get this set squared away...

now my experince with crossover with anacs to pcgs was not with dollars but other coins like nickels.
every nickel but two came back one grade lower that was 100 nickels. Now with ngc if any have that
    * (asterick) on the holder, they have came back the same grade or higher by one grade. now without the * my luck of crossover for the same grade from ngc to pcgs is 35% 29 crossover out of 82 attempts

What does the * on the holder mean???

The "*" is a designation that NGC gives on their holders for coins that they believe are premium quality for the grade.

The * means "Exceptional Eye Appeal", not that the coin is premium quality.
  • I have had good luck crossing both NGC and Anacs coins to PCGS at the same grade. With ICG, PCI and others, I have not faired so well. My average is about 25% have come back 2 grades lower, a couple in toning body bags. This taught me to crack any PCI, ICG etc. holders.

Even though this is a 2002 reply I certainly learned something. I clicked on benefits and received four free
submissions for owning a registry set that is 90% completed. Thanks Endocrinologist. image
