flat rate shipping question

derrybderryb Posts: 37,972 ✭✭✭✭✭
At what weight does it become cheaper to mail priority flat rate instead of regular priority?
Also, can you get the flat rate on the weight (in a flat rate box) and still mail registered?
I have a 80 oz shipment valued at $2000. thanks.

(Edited to correct the weight)

Priority rates are based on zones, so the weight where it becomes cheaper to send by flat rate will vary. You should be able to send a flat rate PM box via registered mail.

Flat rate only fits in certain boxes for the USPS.
Can you get 1000oz of anything in one to ship?
I also believe, you should check though, there is an actual weight limit to "flat rate"

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • 60 pounds in that little box, that should be interesting.
  • I am not sure if you can use flat rate via registered mail. I believe the weight limit is 70 pounds and you do have to use a flat rate box. I believe they come in different sizes. Best to go to your post office and ask all the questions and get the box from them.

You can only use First Class or Priority for Registered mail.

To ship flat rate through registered you can only use the brown tape on the seams. You have to leave the flat rate markings exposed.

The easiest for me is to fill those little video boxes and stuff it in a flat rate envelope. The envelope will bend nicely and then brown tape across the seams of the envelope make it shippable by way of registered.

Flat Rate Priority Mail is limited to 70lbs and the USPS offers on e envelope and two different boxes along with three different rates. $4.80 for the envelope and $9.80 and $12.95 for the boxes.

  • Not to hijack the thread or anything, but I'm curious - what is your record for weight in a flat-rate box?

I once shipped a $100 box of Nickels Flat Rate. I think it was close to 40lbs!

I had a $1,000 bag of IKEs shipped to me via Priority Mail Flat Rate Registered which weighed over 50 lbs.

I had one that was 72 lbs.

I had to open it up and take some items out.

    It shipped at 68 lbs!

They put a lot of red "HEAVY" stickers on it.

I shipped (3) of the same that day.

They were all going to the same place.

I bet the carrier wished he called in sick that day!

  • I've twice shipped a bag of 1,000 Ikes Ikes (around 55 lbs) in a flat rate box. The first time a clerk for whom I have an instinctive antagonism (very rare), who liked to act tough and strong, reached across the counter to take the box from me and I took pains to look nonchalont as I handed the box to him over the postal scale while saying he might find it a bit heavy.

HA-WANG went the postal scale as he dropped it from a foot above.

"JESUS!!!" explaimed the red-faced clerk loudly.

"Tried to warn you" said I humbly, hiding a big grin until I got out the door. Rob

Just shipped 80 silver maples (80 oz) flat rate registered, insured for $2000, with signature confirmation for $27.70.

Still wondering what weight is the deciding factor to go flat rate over plain old cheaper priority box.
