Some of you may remember the other hobo nickel (click here) that came into our shop in June.

Here is one that came in today. What do you think?

  • Tim, I like "BERTY" as much as any hobo nickel I've seen. Rob

    Thanks Rob!

I showed my wife the coin, and she said "You know ... you should keep this one. I like it!"

That is the first time she has ever recommended that I keep something! I guess that she doesn't realize that I keep all of this stuff anyway. I have quite a pile of hard times tokens, store cards, love tokens, and other non-traditional material that I look forward to learning more about someday.

  • Tim, What a great hobby for a professional numismatist. I decided long ago that I could not afford to hold on to any great number of the better Ikes I cherry and/or buy on ebay but I did start gathering many the nice toners that came my way inexpensively, that's my soft spot, my "vice". Rob

Very cool - that's actually an original!

Many, if not most, originals are on 1913 nickels, for whatever reason -- both type I and type II pieces appear way more than they should in a random sampling of Buffnix.

My ideas on the history of hobo nickels run against the grain a bit. I doubt many were done by hobos at all, and I think the vast majority were done well before the Great Depression. I love ones like this -- truly done by hand, a real piece of American folk art.
  • While I know next to nothing about Hobo Nickels, It appears to be an original . Here's a good website if you don't already have this bookmark. Some more experienced Hobo collectors may be able to tell you who the artist was according to the features. Hobo Nickel Artist

That is truly one of the best Hobo Nickels I've ever seen. Great surfaces.

    Thanks John!

The other hobo nickel that I purchased in June is on a nice 1914 coin. That coin was a bit more crude, but I still like it.
