Elizabeth Monroe FS Gold a sleeper??

The Monroe First Spouse coin has been out since Feb. with very low sales, esp. in UNC. The Jackie Unc., at with a mintage of 5174 is currently the king of modern proofs in terms of mintage. Will the Monroe take it's title? What do you think?

Depends on how many were struck and how long the Mint continues to sell them. Some coins have been kept on sale for years.

I read on a previous post here that the mint said each coin would be on sale until sold out or for a maximum of one year. I'll see if I can find the post. If true, that would mean the Dolley Madison should stop being sold in November and the Monroe in February I think.

I believe its "key" status would be determined whenever the series ends. How much
that will ultimately effect relative pricing to the common coins could take some years,
as evidenced by the Jackie Robinson $5 Unc coin.

Given that the #s so far for the Monore coin numbers are so low, esp. since it's been out since Feb. I thought that it, or likely another FS, might come in lower in the end than the Jackie UNC.
The Jackie Unc. of course had such low #s because no one wanted to buy it despite an extended selling period. I would assume that if a FS ended up with lower #s than the Jackie that, given the it was now THE lowest mintage modern commem., in time it would really appreciate, just like the Jackie Unc.
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
Not sure the comparison is relevant.... this is a new series (not a one shot), that is not only disliked but way undercollected. Certainly, it is also overpriced. While the Jackie coin had a certain attraction, given it was a sports figure, and an ethnic fascination as well, the hags - any of them - have nothing to warrant interest other than 'maybe' a low mintage and their PM content. Few collectors care. However, good luck, go with it if you have a hunch... Cheers, RickO

I have the same complaint about the Jefferson coin, especially
the reverse.

I suspect the Jackie unc. gold is overpriced at $4000+. Last night, a 2006-W unc. $25 Platinum Eagle with half the mintage of the Jackie (2,676) sold on eBay for $416. Also, the lowest mintage commem silver dollar, the 1996-D Wheelchair Athlete, sells for only around $300. It has three times the mintage of the Jackie, but modern commem silver probably has at least three times the collector base of modern commem gold, due to affordability.

and i don't think this series will do much besides bullion.

Generally, I agree, although there are a fair number of people who consider modern gold commems
to be glorified "bullion".
Also, the PCGS pop report classifies the Spouse coins as commems. All I know is I wish eBay
had a separate category for them!
