Is there anything of numismatic interest in Houston, Texas?

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
I know that everything is BIG in Texas, so hopefully it will have room for Longacre. image The Man informed me today that I have to attend a meeting to learn a thing or two about the tax systems in the Middle East (presumably, because after this credit crisis, the Middle East will own a lot of our assets, incredibly). This meeting will be held in Houston. Does anyone know if there is anything of numismatic interest in Houston? I know that Heritage is in Dallas, so I am not sure if the vortex created by that organization pulls everthing numismatic-related to the Dallas area, and leaves Houston barren. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

PS. How is the BBQ in Houston?

Money Show of the Southwest is held in Houston each year, usually Nov-Dec. Not sure if/when it will be this year (perhaps Ike messed with the venue and the schedule?)

"Is there anything of numismatic interest in Houston, Texas?"

Not since Dick Osburn got flooded out with Hurricane Ike. If I were going to be in the Houston/Kemah area, and had Hurricane Ike not wreaked so much havoc with so many in the area, I would contact Dick ahead of time to arrange a personal viewing of his inventory. As it is, you would do better meeting up with him at a show.

As for the barbecue in Texas, I would guess it would be spectacular. That is like asking "how is the lobster in Maine?".

I think Osborn was probably one of the best know dealers, there is also http://www.buyuscoins.com/index.tmpl located on I-10 that I think is up and running again. There really aren't a lot of big dealers in Houston considering its size.

The barbeque is ok, they use a fairly heavy red sauce in most of Texas, Goodes has a place just a little ways from the coin shop mentioned above, and County Line is pretty good. The world's best barbeque is of course in North Carolina. Man they make a pork barbeque to die for for.

Unfortunately, my last answer was OT... My apologies.

Longacre, I have no suggestions for numismatic hunts in Houston.

As for BBQ, I think Kansas City may trump Houston

Go visit U.S. Coins. They're located on Katy Freeway a few miles west of downtown Houston.

  • There are several dealers in the Houston area that are worth a visit, one that comes to mind is Royal Coins- the owner is an awesome person and has a excellent selection of CBH's as well as the normal plethera of goodies, his name is Sonny and a helluva person.

If Stuart is up and running again ( feloow boardie) I'm sure he can help you around town and get you in with a few other dealers as well.

  • There's a coin club meeting of one sort or another virtually every week in Houston. Some folks here never miss a one of them.

    Greater Houston Coin Club

    Bellaire Coin Club

    Pasadena Coin Club
  • I like the coin shop in Rice village, Houston Numismatic Exchange. I think it's hnex.com for their website. You have to ask for a lot of stuff that's kept out back.

BBQ here is good, the Mexican food is better though IMO. I suppose it depends on your tastes, as do coin shops I guess.
