A GeckoGrid™ of 20 Pandas for your enjoyment...

This time, 20 one-ounce 'uncs'.

I think Gecko, the panda expert, needs to indicate the exact difference between proofs and uncirculated pandas. To the uneducated like me...these looks proofish.

  • Another fantastic job Adam!!! Cant wait till the 2009 comes out so we can "plug" that hole in the lower right. As far as proof/unc differentiation, heres the deal. In 1983 the silver panda made its debut in proof only issue. 1984, and 1985 both followed with proof only coins. No 1oz silver pandas were minted in 1986. 1987 featured another proof only version, and 1988 was another year devoid of this coin altogether. In 1989, the UNCs were debuted, along with a proof version. The designs are the exact same except the proof has a "P" with a circle on the panda side. 1990, 1991, and 1992 all followed suit with UNC and proof versions sharing designs and a "P" added to denote the proof version. 1993 was different. The UNC design matches the gold and platinum designs, but the silver proof has a distinct design. Same thing for 1994, 1995, and 1996. Because even the UNCs had very low mintages, they often appear "prooflike". This is certainley one of the reasons these coins have become so popular among collectors. Many of the years of UNCs can be found in satin or prooflike appearance as well, which gives collectors a chance to pursue examples of each. Thanks again Adam for another job well done!
  • Here is the grid of the 12 proof pandas.

Note: 1997,98, and 99 are missing as "colorized" versions only were released and I dont consider them true pandas.

I paid a little over 50 times melt for mine several years ago, and remember wondering at that time if I paid to much.
( mine is in a PCGS 67 DCAM tomb.)

It's amazing how fast these Panda's have gone up price in such a short period of time.

    NICE NICE photos!

They'd make nice wall paper as individual shots.
