Do you think this card is worth $5500.00?? Mickey Mantle signed rookie

I was looking at this 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle PSA/DNA as I wanted to add it to my signed rookie collection. While I was debating it back and forth in my head, a zero feedback bidder executed the Buy it Now at $5995.00. I know the seller from a couple deals we've done in the past, so I contacted them today to find out if the zero feedback bidder has come through yet. Of course, they have not, and if they don't come through by next week, he is willing to sell it to someone else. I trust the seller from our prior deals so I've got no worries about that. I made him a firm offer (not $5500.00, a bit smaller) in case the other bidder bails and he said he will strongly consider it and let me know once he knows for sure if the zero feedback bidder is out or not. That being said, he indicated that he would definitely accept a price of $5500.00 for it if the other guy bails, but again I offered him a lower amount. I am supposed to find out early next week. Thus, my question:

If he declines my lower offer, do you think I'd be out of my mind to pay $5500.00 for this card?

The signature is gorgeous, the card is probably a 1 or 2 at best. I don't see many of these around or know of past selling prices for these. How common do you think these are? I don't mind paying a premium if these don't pop up very often as I need the card for my HOF signed rookie collection. (well, need is NOT the proper word, rather, I'd strongly like to have the card for my HOF signed rookie collection)

If you think I'd be out of mind for paying $5500.00, please let me know, you won't hurt my feelings, or if you think I'd be asinine if I get a chance to buy it and don't because I only want to pay $5,000 and he wants $5,500 and I walk away.

What do you think this card is worth?

I personally think that price is a little steep! Great signature, not sure I would pull the trigger at 5K.

WOW! Sweet card. THe card raw is worth what? $2000? $1500? And his signature at a show cost someome $15 20 years ago?
Hard to believe quite a few people didn't took advantage of that? but maybe they didn't.

Yeah I saw that one, but I'd be divorced if I bought that one and rightfully so image (and before someone says maybe that's not a bad idea, we got real close to that about two years ago, and I'm so thankful that she stuck by my side, my wife is a wonderful person and a fantastic mother, and a definite keeper for me, and an absolutely phenomenal person to have weathered our storm)

Even if I collected Mantle $5500 is way too much.

The card is lacking some serious eye appeal.

Edit to add: The sig is great! But the card....

    Mike,

Last week, this card sold for around $1200.

    image

Just comparing the 2 cards, I'd say the one you're interested in is worth at least $2000 unsigned.

Factor in the beauty of Mick's sig, plus the rarity of his sig on his "true rookie" card, and
that might be worth another $1500 max to the value.

I would value the signed Rookie card that you're interested in @ $3,500 - $4,000.

You have an extremely valuable collection from what I've seen .... I would think it
would be worth $3,800 for you to own this card.

On the other hand, I've overpaid for a few rare cards that I wanted, and I never looked back about the money,
because I knew I could afford to do so.

To this day, I have no regrets.

If you want it .... get it! Not sure I'd pay $5,000 for it though image

If I buy it, will you center it for me? image It took a second for me to figure out what you had changed but I finally saw it.

    I like the pretty signature.

    The card is a barker.

I would be pretty surprised if Mr. Levi would pay EVEN $2.5K
    for the card.

    ......................

Then, I think about the economic climate and I think that $5.5K
is a HIGH retail price that is almost certain to adjust way DOWN.

    ....................

So, when I decide it is UGLY and OVERPRICED, in market conditions
I lack CONFIDENCE in, I have to pass.

I would put the card/auto at $2500.....3k max. I think a 51' signed Mick sold within the past year at one of the auction houses...maybe Heritage?

Yes, $5,500 is high for the card but nothing is "overpriced" if you want it and can afford it.

    Speaking ONLY for myself:

I can "afford" lots of stuff. If the stuff is "overpriced," I will not buy it.

    ......

In general, folks who have money do not want to buy "overpriced" stuff.
They did not get that money by "paying too much" for stuff.

Then you don't want it badly enough. image

I just overpaid for a 1960 Topps baseball card that I hadn't seen in that high of a grade in quite some time, So I grabbed it and paid probably $50 more than it was worth. What the hey - it's only money. LOL

I totally agree with you Steve!

If I went through life worrying about "overpaying" for things I wanted, I'd go nuts!

Many of my closest friends are the same way.

How much are beers at the ballpark? Popcorn at the movies?

Would I sneak my own food & drink in any of these venues just to avoid overpaying????

    I think NOT!

Buying a special card that I want, when I want it, at a bit more than I think it's worth, doesn't
    bother me at all!

Go through life justifying every purchase I make? You have to be kidding me image

Bottom line: If you want it .... BUY IT! (If you can afford to do so)

That would mean you really didn't want it as much as something priced less, so Steve's definition still holds true

How often does this card come up for sale?

How much do some other 50s Mantle cards sell for?

Thanks for the opinions so far, and especially thanks for the values of the prior sales. I have offered $5,000 and will honor that if he will sell it to me. I should find out in a few days.

I feel that to me its worth the $5,000 as its an opportunity to fill a big hole in the collection that doesn't seem to come around too often. I believe that might be paying a slight premium as I think PoppaJ had a pretty good valuation of $4,000, but sometimes you have to bite the bullet in order to get what you want. I might be able to find one cheaper eventually at a major auction, but then I'd have to throw the buyers premium on top of the purchase price and that would make it even more prohibitive. It's a gorgeous signature and the condition of the card is not too much out of line with my other signed rookies.

I don't think I will go the $5,500 if he doesn't accept my offer. Something about getting above the $5,000 level is presenting a mental hurdle that I can't seem to jump over.

Keep the opinions coming, that's what makes the board fun.

We are definitely in a downswing as far as card prices go....it is like someone flicked a switch.......you can't buck what is going on with the economy right now...if he doesn't take the $5,000, take a pass......doubtful he gets another offer like that....also doubtful if the 0 feedback buyer even has 500 bucks in the bank, much less $6,000....
