AL And NL Leader In Pitching Shutouts ...

JackWESQJackWESQ Posts: 2,133 ✭✭✭
Who led the AL in shutouts this year? C.C. Sabathia (tied with 7 others) with two (2) shutouts. And who led the NL in shutouts this year? C.C. Sabathia (tied with Ben Sheets) with three (3) shutouts. Now that's pretty cool.

I guess that means he lead the majors with 5. But wont get any Cy Young consideration since he split the leagues. Or at least that is what the common thought on these boards appears to be.

This has happened before, one year David Cone led the majors in k's yet did not lead any one league.

It has also happened to a few batting categories too.

IMO Sabathia will get not only Cy Young votes but will garner some MVP votes too.

    Good for you.
  • I concur with Steve and justifiably so. CC was the most valuable player on the Brewers the past 2 months.

That is excellent trivia. Thanks Jack.

If CC did happen to win the NL Cy Young and Lee wins the AL award that would also create a great trivia question as the only team to have that year's Cy Young Award winners on their team on opening day.

I long for the good old days when sp's actually finished games and threw some shutouts.

Pathetic leading the league with 2, count em 2 shutouts.

Modern day pu$$ies, all of em.

    Dear kadokakid,

    << <i>Pathetic leading the league with 2, count em 2 shutouts. >>

It appears that 2 shutouts has become the rule and not the exception as 2 shutouts led the AL in 2008, 2007, 2006, 2004 and 2003. (Three (3) shutouts led the AL in 2005.)

P.S. And the NL? Just slightly better with 3, 3, 3, 5, 3, and 3 the last six (6) years.

P.S.S. Bonus trivia ... who was the last pitcher to toss ten (10) shutouts in one season? If you know this off the top of your head, I'll be truly impressed.

Not sure on that question, as an Oriole fan from the golden days of pitching I know Jim Palmer had 10 shutouts in the 70's, surely someone else has done it since then, but can't remember who it might be.

The other league leader stat that has dropped severely is complete games, I remember guys throwing over 20 complete games in the 70's, they were also pitching 300 innings and in 4 man rotations.

Tired of the Modern Day Pu$$ies.

I am going to guess Don Sutton.

I was close but no cigar.

    Sutton had 9.

I won't say who the leader is.

    Good for you.

What is your opinion of previous generations of pitchers who would not not put full effort into every single pitch in a game, instead saving themselves so they could still be strong in the later innings?

I would guess Dave Stewart. The A's worked their pitchers hard during his years. I think McCatty and Keough were two of the other starters that logged a lot of innings.

Edited to add that my mind is failing me as I grow older. I was thinking CG. Now where did I put my other sock....
