Buffalo Nickel Guys...

Say you wanted to spend $350 on a better date (semi-key) Buffalo Nickel.

Which date/mm would you buy and what grade would that get you? What would you look for in the coin?

31-S in about MS65. Look for a coin with a sharp strike, little/no carbon, and few ticks.

If you're looking for a "semi-key" date and only have $350 to spend, I'd suggest a 19-D, 19-S, 20-D, or 20-S in AU if you can find one. To begin with, AU is a tough grade for these pieces plus these are tough dates to boot.

do you wanna t1 or t2? if t1, i'd buy a mintmarked 1913-d in gem. if t2, then buy a 1938-d in the highest possible grade you can get. it's not a semi-key, but is by far the best produced of all the buff's.

I'd look for a 15-S in XF45 to AU50, or a well struck 26-D slider AU or Unc.....these are tough coins, but very worthwhile if you can find them. The dates listed by Shamika previously are good choices as well, to which I would also add the 17-S.

Picking up the dates Shamika suggests in nice AU for $350 would be nice, but my experience suggests that is going to be a long, long search (the same holds true for just about mintmarked coins 1917 - 1927). I like the idea of the 31-S in MS65 - you'll have some money left over, should be able to find a really nice piece, and it is the 2nd lowest mintage of the series. You might also consider a 14-D and 13-D T2 in high end AU/lower end MS (at least for the 1913). Both are on the lower end of the mintage range and fall within your price range for some nice looking coins.
