After the game, Scosia is interviewed and states "if we win in Boston Sunday the pressure will all be on the Red Sox"...huh? Dontja have to win all three Mike vs the Red Sox needing to win just one??
Must be a California sour grapes thing. >>
I heard that too. Maybe Mike S. is in shock and forgot it's a only a 5 game series?? Dang, What's up with teams doing so well in the regular season and tanking it in the first round??
The fat lady at the circus just found the strength to get out of her a$$ out of bed and is clearing her throat as she walks to the microphone. This series is all but wrapped up. Yea, yea, yea, I know the history of the Sox, but it is history, this is the present. Strike up the band fellas, I know a really fat girl who feels like singing!!
Did anyone else notice the thousands of opportunities we had to look at Scott Boras behind the home plate umpire at Anaheim ? He positioned himself right where the cameras could see into his box behind home plate all night long.
Ok, Withdrew my post. Any way, on to the business of the day.
Joe Saunders has probably the best chance of any Angel pitcher to come up with a win today. Guy is cooooool. Handles pressure like Alfred E. Newman and his "What me worry?" Fame.
I like our chances today. Will be tough, but we do have a chance.
Angels biggest mistake so far is Kendrick. Partically staright from the DL to the ALDS. No rehab, nothing. When ever Howie has come off the DL in the past, its taken him a fair amount of time before his timing has come back. Striking out 4-5 times, leaving a dozen runners on base isn't cutting it. We need to move him to the 8th spot or bench him.

While I agree that Saunders has been great on the road (10-3), the only thing going against him is that he is 2-0 at Fenway Park this year. What are the chances of Saunders going 3-0 at Fenway this year ? Not too many pitchers have ever done that when the Red Sox have a good club.
Wow, I couldn't believe my own eyes. They said that was the first time in post season history that a single scored 3 runs. Watching the hustle of the Red Sox runners score on that play and seeing all 3 Angels stop and watch the ball drop with no communication just goes to show how much more the Red Sox want the win. The Angels did get the W last night, but the Red Sox are really going for each play.
Its on now baby! Anybody's game. Angels are starting to heat up and everyone's getting involved. Angels pitching shut the RedSox machine down for 12 innings!
Lackey vs Lester tonight. Lackey has a really poor history of pitching in Fenway and Lester is on his game - has been all year. Lets get this one tonight cause there is no sense in going back to Cali.
Anyone know what's the story with Wakefield? Why hasn't he pitched in this series - at least out of the bullpen? We're going to need him next series so it'd be nice if he were a little fresher.

I think they should have pitched Byrd instead of Lopez last night (big timing contrast to Papelbon), but, of course, hindsight is 20-20.
I was at the game last night (it figures). To be honest, the Sox played like crap. I know Lopez got the loss, but it was really Beckett that lost it. You just don't walk home a free run in the 1st inning. Also, I was surprised nobody caught that Ellsbury blooper that drove home the first 3 runs. It was like watching little league where you had the Angel's shortstop, centerfield, and leftfielder looking at each other like "Man, I thought you had the ball". That should have been an out, but the Sox got lucky. In any case, the Sox's big bats, with the exception of maybe Yukie, had absolutely nothing last night. And it wasn't because the Angel's pitching as just that good. They weren't.
Simply put...Beckett stunk and the big bats did nada. No clutch hitting, especially with the bases loaded in the 11th.
Advantage still with the Red Sox, anyone who thinks otherwise is simply not looking at reality. So what if we have to go back to LA, didn't we just win two there?

Yes the Sox still have a big advantage, but I can't see how and why people blame one guy or specific people for losses. The last time I checked it was 9 people on the field and a 25 man roster, right? Lopez and Beckett are key pitchers who are key players and wern't the reasons they lost. The Angels have an offensive lineup that normally get it done. It looks to me that all of the Angels pitchers who came in after Saunders all stepped up big. When you see only 2 hits from innings 5 to 12 with a great lineup like the Sox, that means the pitching was effective for that night. I'm not saying the Angels will bounce back and win the series, I'm just saying the Angels stepped up last night.
I don't understand why Francona didn't go to a "long reliever" like Scioscia did with Weaver. Byrd was ready, both teams had used their closers and the game was still tied. It made more sense to me to see Byrd come into the game. But we can't lay this one on Lopez. Beckett was terrible and the Sox didn't even deserve to go extra innings. That 3 run bloop was a total fluke and the Sox should have lost 4-1.
Pedroia needs to get a hit tonight. My prediction is that if he hits the Sox will win. If he notches another O-fer, the Sox lose (this game).
<< <i>I don't understand why Francona didn't go to a "long reliever" like Scioscia did with Weaver >>
I was just going to say the same thing. Great post. Also, I read in our local paper yesterday an article about Joe Torre's post season thinking. He basically said in post season you have to do everything to win the game that day and not worry if someone will be able to pitch the next game. The Angels had to win, but the Sox should have had the same thinking process.
<< <i>Great series guys. The Angels are a tough team and you've got nothing to hang your head about it. >>
Dumb play, after dumb play....Kendrick was a majore disappointment and Aybar id probably the best bunter on the angels. Can't believe he missed the ball altogether!!!
The Red Sox defense was great, the Angels defense was horrible.
Francona deserves a lot of credit. He never wavers, and sticks to his guns. It is about time he started getting some credit.
Scioscia might very well have over managed himself out of the game in the ninth inning. 2-0 pitch with Delcarmen being inside on everything and he picks that time to run a suicide squeeze?
The Red Sox did so many things well and everybody contributed. The nice thing is they pitched only two pitchers (Okajima and Lopez) the enitre series who are over 30. In 2004 they did it with veterans, last year with a combination and this year with youth. Great to see.

I totally agree! A great season by the Angels, but they didn't rise to the occasion like the Sox did. Congrats to the Sox for beating the AL's best record team .
Also, the Angels owner Moreno should be feeling stupid now after his many verbal attacks on the Dodgers over the last year when he basically said the Angels are the only real contenders in Los Angeles.
According to Billy Beane the playoffs are just crapshoots anyway and even more so in 5 game series. That's why his teams never won in the playoffs, bad luck right?
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set
The Angles won 100 games true, but their runs for and against indicate a team that should have won 88 games. That might be the biggest gap in history. They won a lot of close games because A) they had a good bullpen they had a good manager C) they had a lot of luck
The Red Sox won 95 games and their runs for and against indicate a team that should have won 95 games.
The Angels should not have been favoured before the series - but because they had home field it could have been a pick em.
Billy Beane says the post-season is a crapshoot because nobody has yet to discover a formula that works a majority of the time in the post-season. Even having a dominant starting pitching staff does not guarantee anything.
<< <i>John Lackey said in the Angels locker room after the game...."we are WAY better then they are, we lost to a team who is not as good as us." >>
I didn't see that comment, but it's a lame thing to say. Man up and say you got beat by a better team, right!
Also, the Angels Skipper really disappointed me. I didn't not like some of the things he did during the series.
Lastly, I think when a team like the Angels or any team wins the division several weeks early, that can be a hinderance as they go into the playoffs in cruise mode. The teams like the Rays and Sox who were fighting for the division til the end, or the Phillies and Dodgers who were fighting for a spot til the end all have an advantage as they were already playing in playoff atmosphere.
The Angels management have some BIG decisions they have to make this offseason.
