There's an article in CW about some Republican whack-job who's proposing legislation to eliminate the 5-cent nickel, to be replaced by a clad half-dime!!!!

the whole notion really emphasizes the fact that our entire system of coinage needs to be looked at and revamped. just as other denominations have been eliminated and new ones come into being, we need to have legislation that proposes new ideas, not re-hashes what's already proved to be outdated. this forum seems populated by members who understand that principle while our legislators miss the boat.
clearly, we don't need a new Half-Dime despite the romantic appeal to many of us. it's sort of like the re-use of all the old designs on the Bullion issues. clearly, the Cent/Nickel have both run their course although the latter still has a need in the economy. i'm wondering when one of the Democratic/Republican whack-jobs is going to step forward with a bold proposal for a new system of coin denominations.
