Coins for presents?

Do any of you forumites ever get coins as presents on gift-giving occasions?

My birthday is next month (October 18th, in fact) and it will be my first gift-giving (err, recieveing!) occasion since I became a coin collector.

I've told my mom and brother (the only two people who give me gifts) that I'd be really easy to shop for this year-give me some coins! I'd even be happy with rolls to search through-as even if I didn't get anything I needed, I could spend the collection rejects on other stuff I'd like. I especially want some half dollar rolls because I don't have many of them so I would be nearly guaranteed to get something for my collection.

Have any of you recieved coins as gifts before? If so, how'd it go?

My mom and brother both know I'd be happy with anything I got, and I truly would be, so I'm wondering if I will actually get any coins image

The problem is that having a non-interested non-collector person trying to pick out coins can be disastrous. They do not know what they are looking at. Problem coins are a possibility. Paying way over price is another. Years back my father bought me a Washington Carver commemorative half in maybe XF/AU condition as a gift. I did not ask what he paid for it but the price on the 2x2 holder was well over 10x what the red book value was. If I recall correctly I think the book indicated that he could have got the three-coin year set in MS condition for that price. I think of that every time I look at the coin.

I do not ask anyone to get me coins as gifts.

If my wife wants to give me a coin for a gift then she simply asks me to buy something for myself and hand it to her to wrap. She then gives the coin to me when she is ready.

Proof or mint sets and modern offerings from the mint.

I tend to be too mercurial in my pursuits for anyone but my wife to keep up with them.

Yes, I have been given coins.. and I am always most grateful. However, non-collectors have no knowledge of numismatics, so sometimes it is a colorized ASE, or (and I really liked these) a box of 'Challenge Coins'. For me, it is enough that they are trying to please me.. not so much what it actually is. Cheers, RickO
  • It is a so-so experience receiving coin gifts from non-collectors. They tend to overpay and buy common stuff.

I find it much more fun to give coins as presents. They aren't always occasion presents so there isn't an air of disappointment when a non-collector gets something they may not be so interested in. I look for sentimental tie ins and find that coins are a rich area.

  • My parents have bought me a proof set (or SMS) each year since I was born in 1961. I always appreciated them when I was younger, but when I started collecting again about 2 years ago I realized how great a gift it was. I did not start a similar set for my 10 yr old daughter because she will just inherit mine. She's interested in collecting peices that fit her own tastes anyway. Good thing she's into silver and copper, not gold !!

I sometimes give mint products as presents to non collectors, perhaps to interest them in coins

In receiving a present, the giver may go through a second collector or dealer
who knows what you like, otherwise it's likely for them to overpay, or get
you something that you don't like or collect.

Perhaps your family can order something from the mint if they are not sure.
    (it can always be returned)

Thank you for the insight, folks image The good thing about me and my collection is that I would be happy with anything, and my family knows that image I also regularly give them updated lists of what I don't have or have and I'm constantly talking about coin stuff so I think they should be pretty good in that area. Of cource, if I don't get anything coin related at all, I'll still be happy image

coinman420, that is pretty cool! On another forum I post on there are two other members who share my birthday as well image
