Should I do Winter FUN?

I usually try to go to one national coin show a year. Orlando in January doesn't sound like a bad idea. Is FUN a decent show? Would it be worth the 600+ mile drive it would take me to get there?

FUN is not a decent show.....it's an AMAZING show. I am very excited for FUN this year, because I am now a student at the University of Central Florida, which is only around 20 or 30 minutes from the convention center, as opposed to the 2.5 hour drive I had from Jacksonville.

FUN is a good show. A nice big, national show.

Orlando in January is indeed not a bad place to be. And a good place if you are bringing non-numismatic spouses and/or children, with all the other touristy attractions around.

I used to go every year, but haven't been to a show in a while, now. I will definitely think about it for January. It isn't 600 miles for me, though- more like 200. Hey, if you're comin' down I-95, you could look me up here in Brunswick, GA, just before you get into Florida.

That's another thing I was thinking - bring the family down with me and maybe visit Disney and Sea World while we're there. Make a vacation out of it,

Yup. And they'd have plenty to keep them occupied while you got your sensory overload looking at gazillions of coins on the gigantic bourse floor.

Sorry for you being a UCiF student... but yes, FUN is a fantastic show to go to. You absolutely cannot beat the weather at that time of year... and last year, there was also a surfing convention going on on the other side of the convention center... image

  • If I do go, what do I need to know about the show? What should I expect? What's it like?

What's the biggest show you've been to? If you've been to a Summer ANA, then you've pretty much experienced the same thing...

The show is big and you get a ton of people there... it's a nice area near I-Drive, so there's plenty of hotels and restraunts around... and of course if you bring the family, there's always Disney and Sea World and Universal (Personally, I prefer the first two). There's also some nice restraunts ($$$) that you can go to at Disney that are outside of the parks around the resorts and hotels, plus Downtown Disney.

I'm not sure why you had to bash my school, but I am in the honors program and for aerospace engineering, my intended major, my school is one of the best in Florida, and you can't beat the location.

I went the Spring ANA in Charlotte last year. Had a blast.

So, would it be worth the drive if I'm only going to spend a couple grand? Is it just big business or can the little guys be catered to as well?

Yes, it would be more more more than worth it... I don't think even the Spring ANA shows are nearly the size of FUN... yes, there will always be those big guys there, but you still get a ton of the medium guys from all over the country that make it, and even a lot of small guys from the SE. I believe they also have had a "budget" section in the past for dealers that are selling coins for $1000 or less.

  • The only reason I'm having second thoughts about the show is the 2009 UHR Saint. The show is on what, the 3rd? And the UHR is due out sometime in January. Even the coin comes out on the first, I doubt any vendors at FUN would have them. And, if I go the show with $2500, I'd only be able to spend probably $1200 so I'd have enough left over to buy the UHR.

I agree with fat man, it is THE show of the year. As for the weather, well, it can be a bit chilly that time of the year in Orlando... at least for those of us who reside in South FLA.

  • probably the largest show in the country . something for everyone in all price
ranges . us coins ,foreign coins ,paper money , other assorted numismatic items .
many exhibits , classes ,seminars , etc .
Yes ,it can be cool in the evenings . one time i was there , it was high forties to
low fifties, and a windbreaker or light jacket can be useful .
for more info , the club has a website , www.funtopics.com
updates available as it gets closer to the show .

I just looked at a calendar, and this information might help: The show is open to the public from January 8-11 (Thursday to Sunday.)

Thanks, I thought it was earlier. I guess I'll have to see what the US Mint is doing, and only hope I can get the UHR at the show.

If you could choose one show to attend per year it should be either the FUN convention in January or the ANA summer convention.

Just be aware that room rates for the hotels near the convention center tend to be on the higher side during the FUN convention and considering the weather in the area sleeping in your car probably isn't an ideal option.

It's a great show. You can save some money by not staying directly near the convention center. There are plenty of hotels within a 5 to 10 minute drive.

No UHR at the FUN show -- I think it comes out in March.

Anyway, I highly recommend it for all the reasons cited above, plus VAM Thing VI image. It looks like I'll be flying to Tampa and renting a car -- cheaper than flying to Orlando.

In March? Really? I saw a brochure GoldBully posted and it definitely said January 2009...

  • The nice thing about this show is that you can get a room in a nice hotel like a hampton for $70 or under. The prices for hotels in fl are usually the highest in late jan, feb, and march. We go to ORlando about once a year and we always find nice hotels along international drive for $60 to $70. We spend half our time there and the other half at disney hotels which for the money are a tremendous value. You can stay at a disney all star hotel which is considered their lowest hotel for $100 a night. Spend a day at the coin show let the family go to a water park and spend the rest of the time on vacation. This show is a great excuse to take a vacation and a nice way to start the new year.
