I thought some of LIBERTY had to show to be a VG?

These must be tough to find with the price guides not reflecting it. From the outside looking in it seems like this was a lop-sided purchase.

    congrats and nice coin though.

Some of the LIBERTY does show, though it looks weak. PCGS also likes to see full rims for a VG coin and looks like this coin barely made it. Would not be surprised if it came back a G06 next time through. Even with that being said, congrats on getting it slabbed. This coin is rare no matter what number the plastic has it at. Yes, the price guides are behind on a lot of this CC Seated material.

I suspect raw coins from eBay sellers that don't typically sell coins are a better than average risk. It's the raw coin from the coin dealers that cause me to hesitate.

Any of the scarcer CC-mint Seated coins are going to trade above published prices. And if the price guides increase, the sellers will increase their ask prices in response. This is simply reality for Seated coin collectors. The exception would be the handful of really common CC dimes and quarters, which trade slightly above common date prices. Many collectors of the dimes and quarters simply never obtain the rare CC mints because they can't stand the thought of paying 2X Trends, but you'll never complete your set unless you're willing to pay full blown retail for the key dates, or settle for a damaged piece as a filler.

Anyone can do well buying raw coins on ebay if they stick to sellers who have good return policies. If you get the coin and it's a cleaned piece of junk with deceptively original-looking photos, then send it back and don't buy from that seller again. That's what I do, and probably 30% of the coins go back. However, the occasional cherrypick makes up for the lost shipping costs.

  • I have to admit that I get a kick out of buying raw off Ebay and taking a chance- sorta like gambling that can pay off if you decipher the pictures well. I've gotten some great bargains and rare die marriages off of the Bay, but some real dogs as well.

In my most recent submission, I was 4 for 5 on raw coins from Ebay- the other that didn't slab as "cleaned" I bought from a dealer.

Well, since I've already had two offers for it north of $850, I'm guessing it would have cost more to get one already in a slab.

Really? .... Take the offer ...
This one went for $375 + the juice, but it's graded by ICG. Would that have made a difference? Same grade.

For me anyway, there's just a slight difference between PCGS and any other grading company. And my own definition of "slight" difference can be defined in an illustration as...

    BTW, I'm keeping the coin.image

  • price guides are for the collectors of stuff like MS63 jefferson nickels. truly scarce coins follow a completely different set of rules.

  • I've gotta respond to Dizzyfox's picture.

In all seriousness, if you're looking at coins in the VG4 thur F or even VF many times, all the accepted grading services will grade very similiar. It many times pays to buy for instance a semi key or key coin in an ICG slab for less dough that's authenticated, then crack it and submit to PCGS. It's a fairly safe game to play IMHO so long as you determine for yourself that it has no issues. The tricky part is when you're dealing with higher graded coins, becomes much more subjective, esp in MS state and copper color.

    This is my opinion.

Submitting is an adventure. Buying raw on ebay is a gamble. Coin collecting is a passion and making money is an art.
    Whatever you do, enjoy !
  • every time i see a conversation like this i cant help but smile. "if its not already in plastic, there must be something wrong with it" yes there probably is so its probably a good idea to refrain from bidding on any scarcer date seated coins on ebay unless its in plastic. and if it is on plastic, there is still the worry of it will upgrade.

You hit the nail on the head.

Many times the best deals on raw coins are from sellers who are not coin collectors or dealers, or primarily sell other stuff (like jewelery or auto parts).

If you buy a raw coin from one of the 10,000+ feedback eBay raw coins sellers you will rarely get a good deal, and there is a good chance you will get hosed.

In the ebay listing, I liked the seller's response! image

I pretty much agree with this. In my case, I certainly had trust in the seller and I felt the coin was worthy. This was backed up (considerably for me) by a PM that I received from a fellow board member who knew the seller and absolutely vouched for them. This just added to my confidence in the transaction, and at the end of the day, I was very pleased for now I have in my collection a very attractive and tough early CC Half slabbed by PCGS.
