First purchase..

Hope all is well with everyone. I have finally made my first purchase as a new coin collector, and boy am I excited. After getting great feedback from a previous post on what to collect, I made a decision to collect Lincoln proofs. From 1959 to present. Once I get more experience under my belt I will go back furthur and expand my horizons. That being said, I know it aint much, but I bought two pretty lincolns. One is a 1978 -s and one is a 2005 -s. I bought them raw but they are just gorgeous. I can not wait to get more.

That's a good set to start with if you like proofs.
You can get most of them for cheap and even the best dates won't break the bank.

Thats why I am doing it. It will be a great learning experience for me and it will not break the bank. Trial and error wont kill me. Then I can move on to bigger and better(more expensive things). image

  • Just buy the entire proof set. That way you will already have the others when your collecting desire changes.

You can pick most up for under 10 bucks...
  • Modern Lincoln Proofs are a good choice. For a little more of a challenge and a
modest increase in your budget, you may decide to collect these in Cameo or
Deep Cameo. Finding these raw will take some time so you will need to be patient.
Most dates in dcam from 1959 - 1976 are more difficult than most imagine.

    Good Luck in Your Endeavors!!!!

Or you could go with the "color proofs" motif...image

  • I started collecting when I was around 12 with a mail order 1970 something mint set....paid twice as much as it was worth...but the rewards were that it got me hooked on a great hobby. Now my Lincolns are almost finished, well if I don't count the early matt proofs. I still want to upgrade my earlier stuff but it takes time. So what I am trying to say is that Lincolns are a great start, collect what you want, and pick when the sets done cuase theres tons of different ways to go about collecting coins and no one single person is right or wrong. Look at the lowball sets people have posted or the tonies. They are all great in themselves, but ultimately you decide what you like or don't like.

That's a great set to start with.

When that is done the next best thing is the original Lincoln Matte Proofs. image

That is my ultimate goal. The modern lincoln proofs with Deep cameos. I think those coins are just beautiful. I just need to learn a little more, and be able to tell the difference when the coin is raw. I paid 3$ a coin. So I do not know if that is a good deal or not. I feel that it was.
