Are people getting weird with their shipping methods, or is it just me?

I just got a package from an ebay'er containing almost $1,000 worth of crusty busties, with nothing but delivery confirmation. I had to write them an email telling them what would have happened if I had happened to be dishonest. Now that I think about it, people seem to be getting more and more bizarre with their shipping methods. I got a $225 Bust quarter last week from an ebay'er who sent it certified in a plain business envelope, with the edges torn halfway open. It's as if I've entered some sort of alternate postal reality. Someone pinch me.

some people use private insurance...less cost (and likely quicker-paying) than USPS
  • I've gotten to the point that the only way I like to ship is Priority (about 9"x5" box) with Insurance and Delivery Confirmation. It is a little more expensive but I think it's a safer way to ship than the bubble envelopes and way, way better than an envelope.

I agree and very similar to what I do. You can get the boxes from ebay for free and in my listings I basically split the charges with the buyers so they don't feel like they are getting ripped off with high postage charges.

I've used bubble mailers more than 1000 times and *knock on wood* have never had a problem. I do use boxes and registered mail for coins in the high hundeds or thousands of dollars, but for the under $500 stuff I think bubble mailers are just fine. My two cents.

  • I always send Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation (and insurance if requested). For 1 coin, I put it in a bubble mailer, and then inside a large Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope. I seal it up, and then put some of that fabric paper tape around the seam just in case the seal isn't tight. Seems to work for me.

I like to keep the package looking as much like a $10 piece of junk as possible. No extra tape, no extra security measures to tell people this is really important. But I add signature confirmation. My guess is this guy forgot to click the signature confirmation button when he printed his shipping label. I've done that a time or two. This morning I did it on a $700 coin but I caught it and reprinted the label. --Jerry
  • Always, always purchase the insurance yourself for any item you sell that you can not afford to replace. Insurance is for the sellers protection. The buyer is under no obligation to give you any money for something he doesn't recieve. Paypal will do a chargeback regardless if you offered insurance to the buyer and he refused.

I got an Indian Cent yesterday loose in a #10 envelope. It wasn't a big dollar win but is a 2x2 too much to ask, or even for the coin to be folded up in a piece of paper?

A pet peeve of mine is when they stick the paper that covers the glue in the package.

Paypal requires you to ship to a confirmed address and have electronic proof (signature confirmation) of delivery.

PayPal does not require insurance ... just online tracking (Delivery Confirmation) and on items above $250 .. (Signature Confirmation)
