What lesson do wish you learned 10 years ago?

lkeigwinlkeigwin Posts: 16,893 ✭✭✭✭✭
...Personally, I was slow to sort out the TPGs. Later I learned to pay more attention to the coin, not the grade or TPG. I still make a lot of mistakes but I think I am a little bit wiser. Yet after 45 years collecting I still feel like a neophyte sometimes. This board is priceless, and good for humility.

I don't think you ever stop learning. I did get my lesson in about 1980, and I am glad I did!

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    Oh, you mean coins?

  • Not to buy valuable, single, raw coins on eBay. Even if the seller has a return policy; it's such a hassle to return it. The whole thing's a crapshoot.

That naturally toned Classic Commems are beautiful to own and look at, but almost impossible to recoup your money on when it's time to sell them. image

Don't blindly rely on a slab to tell you whether a coin is good or bad.

Ten years ago I was offered a 1904-S Half in AU 55 for $1400 - and passed
on it because I was just starting the quarter collection and wasn't sure if I'd
    even start a Half set...

  • Quality...not quantity. And patience is the key to a great collection. It took until about 8 years ago to learn this.

Should have stuck to PCGS on the old gold and should have bought as much new gold as I possibly could. image

    1) Don't buy raw (uncertified) DMPL Morgans at a show. They're not slabbed for a reason.

    2) It's OK to pay over greysheet for the really rare type material, because it won't matter in 10 years.
  • maybe not 10 years ago, perhaps 40 years ago.
