Long Beach Auction Win! 1804 Large Cent!

AnkurJAnkurJ Posts: 11,370 ✭✭✭✭
I wanted to get the keys out of the way first.....and have realized that 1793 liberty cap, 1799 and 1804 will be hard as hell. Well I have gotten one of them out of the way, and I love the way it looks. No corrosion, and very sharp details. Holder from across the street, but it will be cracked out for my date set anyway. Have to see what to do about that verdigris on the reverse though.... I know its not active as its not flourescent green, but I think it should be removed.

Feel free to give your thoughts/compliments/complaints image

i also like the coin and in my opinion would leave it alone. why try
to remove the gunk... it gives it character.

    Nice die state C.

I bought Walter Husak's "b", with the only the RTY cud:

  • Very nice looking 1804 cent. The detail looks to be better that the VG08 grade assigned by NGC. I like the color and surfaces. image
  • I guess that $30 for the carrying case put you over the top!!!! LOL

Seriously, VERY nice coin...congrats on bringing her home! I love that look, the worn/well circulated look that has strong devices.

I agree with speety...obverse and reverse cuds are very cool!! Again, nice pick-up......not so sure I'd crack that one, though.....regardless, enjoy it!!!
I'll come up with something, eventually.

Very nice. Though you'll be making a HUGE mistake if you try to "improve" it. Please, leave it be.

I saw that coin, and considered bidding. Happy to see it go to a forum-friend. Congrats. That's a great coin, and absolutely fabulous for an 1804!

A fabulous coin. Isn't it amazing to see suchdie destruction on such a low mintage date? Either poor die quality or severe overuse of that pair.

I had a very high grade Mickley "restrike" but never a real 1804. That one is very cool coin!

Very nice. I watch 1804s because my daughter was born in 04. Did the VF25 example that sold for $6k tempt you? I like the 25 grade in the first 10-15 years of cents. --Jerry

I bet it looks much nicer in hand. I didn't get to lot viewing but the coin is very dark in the slab so I'm betting harsh lighting is highlighting every hit. --Jerry

I agree completely, the die cuds add so much character. I dont even bother looking at the high grades for these key dates, they just cost too much.

Compared to the rest of the 1804s I've seen, this coin is also way, way above average.

That said, I'm scratching my head a bit on that one -- it went too cheap, IMO. Wonder what we're missing....Mike

I love this one (1797), but WOW the reserve is high. And I cant seem to find what the problem is with this coin...
