Has there ever been a superior counterfit Gold Coin out there.

I was wondering how many so Be old Gold $20 libs or Saints people have in their collections are really Gold plated metal filled junk?
I once heard years ago there were some good $20 saints that were Counterfit, is this why we should buy slabbed gold from the TGP's.

Come to the next ANA Summer Seminar Counterfeit Detection class to see one.
I specialize in Errors, Minting, Counterfeit Detection & Grading.
Computer-aided grading, counterfeit detection, recognition and imaging.
<< <i>Many of you have mentioned the Omega coin (I'm assuming the 1907 HR), but the scariest one, I think, is an Omega coin that has had the actual "Omega Symbol" skillfully taken-out.

I was just about to ask - if the symbol was taken out, are the counterfeits still detectable? I assume they would be, but what markers would give it away? Tool marks where the symbol was?

The danger is far from just the Omega coins. There are thousands upon thousands counterfeit gold coins made from real gold that will fool anyone that hasn't attended an ANA class on detection, and then it's still very difficult to detect them all. Essentially, any gold coin with a nice numismatic value that is raw, should be viewed with suspiscion.
I'm currently working on a book about John Ford and the "Franklin Hoard" which had a group of prooflike 1853 USAOG $20 gold pieces, among many other items.
These were sold as proofs for big money back in the 1950s.
During the 2008 ANA convention, at the meeting of the SPPN, those particular pieces were finally declared to be "transfer die forgeries".
Eric Newman declared basically the same thing back in 19666, but received no support for the validation.
Well made gold coin forgeries have been around for centuries.

Yes because the Omega Man coins still have tooling marks evident. For example on the HR, there are tooling marks on the ray above the MCM in the year.
