Stephen A. Smith takes Matt Millen to task

The Monday morning topic on ESPN2's "First Take": After two weeks as a starter, is Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers the real deal?

"I like what I'm seeing from Aaron Rodgers," offered Stephen A. Smith. "Right now he's playing just as good as any quarterback in the NFL."

But?

Smith continued: "The key thing for me is, remember he was playing against the Lions. ...

"This team is just atrocious and Matt Millen is a walking football atrocity. He is the worst executive, in my opinion, in the history of team sports.

"He is flat-out garbage. The fact that he is allowed to have a job, the fact that he is allowed to walk though the streets of Detroit to enter Ford Field is an abomination in and of itself.

"There should be barricades keeping this man out of the city limits. He should not be allowed to be employed by the Detroit Lions. He is a disgrace of the highest order.

"And that's why you can't take anything Aaron Rodgers did yesterday seriously, because we are talking about the Detroit Lions, who are absolute garbage. ...

"(Millen) is clueless, he doesn't know what he's doing. Until they get rid of him, we're going to be saying that a whole bunch of people look good when they play the Detroit Lions."

What was the question again?

Funny thing is that Smith is not lying or stretching the truth even a little bit.
  • Actually, this is the only time I have heard S. Smith tread delicately and understated. It has been hard damn work being a Lions fan for over 30 year.

Millen is bullet-proof. Part of the Ford family. He is going nowhere and so are the Lions...but can you really blame Calvin Johnson and
    Roy Williams on Matt?

  • For the first time in a decade, I honestly felt that this team had a real chance to make the playoffs before the season started. It really didn't have anything to do with the 4-0 preseason except for the fact they were actually tackling, something this team hasn't done for some time. But in the first two games, it's back to business as usual. They cannot tackle anybody. They still have trouble running, although now it seems likes it's more because they're so far behind and need to pass and less because of capability. I was way, way, way off about this team IMO... Does that tell you anything about this organization? It's fans usually are giving up on the season by WEEK 2.

Millen is a joke, but the Fords are bigger idiots. Millen is either genius to be able to keep his job this long, or the Fords are the true jokes and the worst owners in football history. Marinelli hasn't shown me sh*t. He says he's going to bring in a bunch of good character guys, which apparently is translated into less promising Tampa Bay toss-offs. He hires Joe Berry (his son-in-law) for defensive coord, and this guy blows the salty pickle. Honestly, this organization is one of the biggest jokes ever. Sad, because this place would explode if the Lions ever made it to the big game.

Actually Isiah Thomas is the worst (Millen is a close second), but Smith is friends with Thomas.

    Can't argue with that.

Connecticoin has a point. As bad as Matt Millen has been, at least he hasn't been found liable for sexual harassment to the tune of $11.6 million.

Possibly Thomas is worse, but they (the Knicks) at least don't have a fear of free agency. Now their success in it is a different story, but at least they try bringing in some good players. The Lions only want to sign a free agent if nobody else wants them. Then they still sign them to a contact too large for their worth.

  • Imagine if you could add one person to such a joke of a franchise and they automatically become an annual playoff team, wouldn't he have to be the considered the best running back ever?

Millen hired an inlaw to be defensive coordinator? seems like a stretch. I'm guessing that wouldn't happen with most franchises. Conflict of interest?

  • Wouldn't doubt it. I would half expect him to hire his grandmother to wash the jerseys.

I also am subjected to Detroit sports talk radio. Millen gets crucified constantly - more, every time the Lions lose. Which is a lot.

Kinda nice though. gives all us Detroiters a chance to blow off some steam about everything else that's bothering us. I say keep him until he's so pathetic, he'll be endearing. Like Wayne Fontes.
