So, is this the real deal?

1916 SLQ. For me, I thought the lower curl on the robe is supposed to be more flat? Diagnostics anyone?

1916 SLQ on the bay.

Think I found the answer: Diagnostics by CoinZip.
It appears to be a 1917.

    Doesn't work on silver.

He posted plenty of pictures, but none have convinced me by looking at the date area.

I don't know the diagnostics off the top of my head, without looking at the link previously posted.

I'll bet you a quarter there have been at least a half-dozen times on eBay where somebody has tried this with a dateless SLQ, and the pictures have shown three stars below the eagle. There's a diagnostic anybody can check, haha. At least this guy has a Type 1.

    This coin is, without a doubt, a 1917 T1.
  • coindudeonebaycoindudeonebay Posts: 1,735 ✭✭✭
Take a look at this. You can kinda see a 1 and a 6. I think it was scratched in and then worn down to make it look like a "16". Look at the pic I worked up and then look at the picture that Sumorada posted.

Not in a million years would I buy that coin based on those images. 1916? Not in my opinion.

Fortunately, the 1916 SLQ is one of the easiest coins to authenticate, even without a date.
The shield rivets on a 1916 are completely different from a 17 T1. Take a look at any certified genuine low grade 16. The various differences between the two types will hit you like a ton of bricks.
  • even if i could make out the date in those pics his return policy would make me click the back button.

  • Got this response from the seller:

    << <i>HI,
I WENT TO YOUR SITE AND I SEEN THE EXAMPLES. I UNDERSTAND YOUR THEORY. NOW THE 1916 EXAMPLE IS 3X THE 1917'S LEG CLOSE UP. THE EXAMPLE IS NOT HEAVILY WORN AS MINE THUS EXPOSING THE LOOPED GOWN APPEARS LARGER AS DOES THE LEG, BEING ANKLE AND FOOT. THIS IS AN OPTICLE ILLUSION BECAUSE OF THE SUPER ZOOM ILLUSTRATION. THE HEAD MATCHES THE 1916 EXAMPLE AS WELL. NOW LETS EXPLAIN THE ..16 THAT IS VISUALLY AND FACTUALLY DEFINED? THIS IS NOT AN OPTICLE ILLUSION BUT A REAL 16 ! SO WHAT YOUR TELLING ME IS IT IS FOLLOW THE LEADER TIME AND THE WORLD IS FLAT? LET ME ADD THAT I AM INSULTED THAT YOU IGNORE THE PRESENCE OF THE XX16 AS IF YOU WERE THERE CRAFTING EVERY DIE USED FOR PRODUCTION WITH EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT OCCURED IN 1916 AND WHY EVERY COIN IN THE ENTIRE SERIES WAS BUMPED UP SEVERAL GRADES BECAUSE OF THE WEAK STRIKE THEORY. THE DATE IS 1916 AND YOU CAN ONLY CONCUR THAT THIS IS A 1916, IN YOUR CLASSIFICATION A VARIETY 1916.IN MINE A 1916 TYPE I SLQ. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INPUT BUT I WILL GO WITH THE DATE AND NO STARS.
    RESPECTFULLY,
    MIKE
    NYMIKE3
    [/Q

So, I sent him this in response:

<< <i>Optical illusion? Are you kidding me? There are many differences between a 1916 and other type 1's. the easiest to tell is the lower curl on the gown. That's because the coin is in such low grade. If you truly believe this coin is a 1916, send it in to ANACS, if it comes back as a 1916, I'll pay your fees on the coin and then you can sell it for twice your asking price. Let me know if you decide to send it in and let me know what you think when it comes back as a 17. Oh and I can partially see a 16 on there, but I believe the date was scratched in and then the coin worn down to make it look like a 16. I don't believe you did this, but I do believe it was done. >>
