I bought my first 1/10 oz PANDA today and now...

I was killing some time at a local B & M that i go to every other month or so. I just just looking around the showcases and i saw a few PANDAs. I ask the owner how much and he said they were 76 dollars each. He said he had about 20 of them. I told him i wanted 2 of them. I bought a few other widgets and paid and left the store. I showed my wife upon returning home and got her seal of approval. The dealer has 18 more of various dates. I called himback and ask about them. 75 dollars each if i take them all. I am going by to pick them up in the morning. Cute little things still in the sealed plastic. These 2 were proofs from 1983. I would have never ever thought of buying one of these if i had not read about them here on the forums. Looks like i will have 20 tommorow and be looking for more. Thanks Geko109. I now plan on doing a set. Somebody had posted a link on this forum that had the dates and mintage figures. Any idea where that link or address can be found?

Gold went back up today. It's at $763 and change right now. If you get those for $75 each nice job, you'd be buying below melt value.

I think this is the link you want:

    Gold Panda Mintages

    I like Panda's also:

    GDH 10 YN Gold Panda's 1982 - 2000

    GDH 50 YN Gold Panda's 2001 - Date

Grandam- Thanks for the info. Around here the few local B&M do not seem to care one bit about the pandas in gold and silver. I think (it is dangerous for me to go off memory) a few weeks back another local B&M had a large silver panda with box and papers for melt. I will check out the info. Buying at melt on any thing is nice.

I barely know about the gold ones, do not confuse me more. BTW they are all proof 1983's.

No gold proofs were made until 1986. Nice pick-up though. Did you get back to buy the other 18 coins? Here is what a complete 27 year date set looks like.

Geko- I have 21 total now, most are 1983's. I was back at the B&m on tuesday and passed on 50 two peso gold coins for 1850. That was melt. Dealer said he had more pandas coming on wensday but then the market spiked. I know i should just buy the rest anyway. I am really starting to like the little guys. Hard to believe the 83's are not proof. They sure look it to me.

No offense to the Panda collectors, but there are two more appropriate forums for discussion of these:

    Precious Metals
    World and Ancient Coins

These pandas, while cute and cuddly, have nothing to do with US Coins. This should be self-evident to those who collect them.

You are right RYK, what we need more of in here are Jeff nickel and proof Franklin threads. Oh, and the occassional attack of forum members sprinkled in to keep things interesting.

If the attacks are related to US Coins, that's fine with me.

But the Jeff nicks and Frankies arent ok with you?image Face it RYK...while you are undeniably 100% correct that this thread belongs elsewhere, you have to concede that these coins are more interesting than at least half of the thread topics in THIS forum.

Actually, I find these Panda coins to be completely uninteresting, but that's not the point. The point is that there is an appropriate forum to discuss them, two in fact, and this is not one of them. Frankies and Jeff nickels are part of the US Coin series, and whether or not I am interested in them, threads on the topic of Jeff nickels and Frankies are welcome here. If I started a thread on Continental Dollars, an interesting and historic US coin, on the PM forum, this would be similarly wrong. Other than attention-seeking behavior, I can think of no other reason why you would pursue this point.
