1/20th ounce of platinum worth over $900?

I had purchased this coin about 3 years ago for roughly $65 at a local coin shop. I just came across the same coin for sale on ebay and was STUNNED! I emailed a panda expert buddy to confirm the true value of the piece, and he told me its a $900 coin raw, and somewhat more if slabbed 68 or higher. So will this one go 68+ based on the pics?

No IMHO, that rim ding will give it a 67.
  • The rim ding below the date and the line below 1/20 would drop it below a 68. Other than that, it is hard to tell what is a mark on the coin and what is dust.

Agree..that ding caught my eye right away.........but I can't grade very well and not these coins for sure. The ding just is very distracting to me for a 68 level coin.

  • I very respectfully appreciate your feedback guys, but do you have any idea just how small this coin is, and thus how small the "ding" is? Also, the line beside the 1/20 was just lint. How severly does a "ding" less than the size of this period ( . ) affect a coin's grade?

  • Didn't mean to criticise and I may be 100% wrong. Just going by your original pic it caught my eye in a bad way.

My skills at grading these are useless.

Just thought for a 900 buck purchase my observation might be some insite.

68's don't have rim dings. they have hairlines or smudge, but you start putting MARKS on a piesce and it is 67 best.
  • In fact, the more I look at the pic, it almost appears to be a planchet flaw "as made". There is no metal displacement, like what would be expected from a "hit". It almost looks like the metal was either never there to begin with, or was sliced away somehow without disturbing the surrounding material.
  • Even if it was "as made", it would still hurt the eye appeal and therefore the grade. But, I still think it is a rim ding.
  • Is it legite? I am not a collector of these so I have no idea on how to grade 'em but where are the details on the reverse? I have loked at some other posts here of the larger silver and gold pieces and appreciate the steps and other details that do not appear on this Panda of yours... For a proof it lacks detail on the reverse IMHO...
