Are these worth collecting? Where can I locate more info on them and are there some deal breakers price wise that would make it impossible to complete the set for a collector of average means? Mintages....etc

Any info would be greatly appreciateThanks

  • I have one of these in my collection as well. The 34 is a pretty high mintage coin at over 128 milllion but the junk boat on the reverse is pretty cool. There is a birds over variety that is a much smaller mintage and is valued much higher.
  • Well I am a type collector of ship coins, don't have that one. It would be worth to me what ever I paid for it.

As to your other questions I am sorry I cant help

These dollars were also restruck by the three United States mints in 1949.

See my article on 1949 China restrikes which accompanied the Mexico restrikes.

  • Good info so far....30 million......wow...I wonder how these pull $100 plus dollars for uncirculated examples when you can get some common date Morgans with lower mintages for much less.....interesting image

Well for what it's worth I saw BIN's for MS63's on Ebay and I think they were asking $175 and I won this for like $80 bucks which I thought was good but.....30 million.....holy smokes image

They are a very popular issue. You got a fair deal at $80. Prices for the 34 Junk Dollar have appreciated rapidly over the past few years (used to be able to get a choice BU example for less than $40). Now they regularly go for over $100 and I see more upside as China expands its collector and investor base.

    << <i>Sun Yat Sang >>

I thought it was Sun Yat Sen?

Great looking piece. Nothing "junky" about that "Junk Dollar"! image

My mother has an old piece of cutout jewelry made of one of those, with the junk cut out.
