Cards arrived and not in condition described....

I'm sure it's happened to all of us. What do you do when you get NRMT MINT cards in EX-MT condition?
I tend to expect a grade or so less than what is described, but not several less. any thoughts?

  • If you got them on eBay you have to expect that. If you got them on here, I would be PO'd. Happened to me recently on here. I just bit my tongue, well my typing fingers, and moved on.

I got them on Ebay. I probably have overgraded some stuff accidentally, but I'll refund or do something to make it right. I try to grade as accurately as possible or undergrade. But, I rec'd some EX or VG-EX cards that were described as NRMT. That's a big difference.

What $ amount are we talking? If they were lower value I would probably just move on.

About $70. I try to move on, but some of these cards are SO far from what was described...

Return them, if you don't like them.

File a PayPal SNAD; guaranteed win for buyers.

I would return the cards for a full refund. If you pay with paypal, you should be fine.

$70.00 is a good amount of money and don't let it go. For $10.00, I'd just move on.

    Good luck.

If grading is subjective and PSA is all over the place with their grades, how does anyone expect ebay sellers to adhere to a higher standard??

I figure if you buy raw cards on ebay you take your chances and take what you get. You doing it to save money and most often get what you pay for.

If you want educated answers then lets see A) a link to the auction, and B) a scan of what you received.

Get your money back. send him a nice short email saying you were not pleased and already sent them back, insured with delivery confirmation. You don't stay a virgin very long on ebay. chaz

Here's what a typical ebay vintage baseball card lot usually entails from most weasel powerseller dealers.

    Advertised as a NM lot.

You'll receive the commons mostly in EXMT with maybe a few actually NM but probably OC.....and the key cards will be EX-EXMT or worse - I bid on lots accordingly based on that likelihood - That's ebay.

Also on the key cards - they'll virtually always have "flaws" of some type such as staining, ink smears, crease or a wrinkle, OC or even sometimes miscut, as well as other problems......expect it and bid your price accordingly....that's ebay.
  • That's unfortunate and extremely annoying. It just kinda comes with the territory of the bay.

Yeah, I don't usually get upset if the cards seem kinda close to the condition, but the star cards just aren't even in the lowest range of the description. The guy has great feedback. I'm going to do the SNAD dispute and go from there. I guess I'll just have to stick to buying graded cards. I did win several auctions recently for a bunch of 1972 baseball and they were described accurately which was nice.

If, and this is a big if, they are not as described, why wouldn't you give the seller a chance to make things right first before filing a paypal SNAD claim?
  • Contact the seller and see what he is willing to do. Also leave appropriate feedback based on how the seller handles the situation - other buyer need to know if this guy has poor customer service and over-grades his cards.

I saw a post recently where a buyer bought hundreds of dollars worth of nm-mt 71 topps, and received vg-ex to ex-mt cards. He filed the SNAD with paypal and lost his case almost immediately.

Try to work it out with the seller first, then resort to snad and feedback. You might have a better chance at getting something back.

This is pretty much of the reality of buying raw cards on eBay. I used buy raws card on eBay from 1999 through 2000 with very mixed results.

After a seven year hiatus, I tried it again in 2007 for an entire year in an attempt to get some of the harder to find cards. I returned quite a few purchases which wore out my welcome with many of these dealers who specialize in raw cards, but the good thing is all of the 15-20 or so returned card shipments were refunded without a hitch. So my advice is to contact the seller and politely ask what his return policy is.

Some guys buy raw on Ebay all the time and then those cards wind up in PSA 8 and 9 holders. How does that happen?

  • Buy enough raw and eventually you'll find a few that grade high. And when you only pay PSA 5 and 6 prices, you can afford the 90% miss rate and still do ok

I once bought a raw '55 Bowman Russ Meyer on Ebay for $1.00, and it came back PSA 8.

    You can get lucky.

But I also once bought a raw '57 Topps Kluszewski for more than $1.00 and it came back PSA 2.

So you can get unlucky, too.
  • I buy lots of raw and have done very well, getting many vintage 8-9's. It takes some luck but get used to whos selling, know the places that sell cards passed over for grading and avoid them and look for people selling collections or who mainy deal in raw. A lot of times I will buy one or two cards from someone to see how they look in person if they are nice then they will get a lot of higher bids in the future.

An example- I buy a small lot on ebay from a seller named Chandy, he sells a lot of misc cards, I first purchased a couple exhibits listed as EX, when I got them they were all ex and even some higher. So I keep up with his auctions and 2 months later he has an auction for another 8 NM exhibits. I won the lot for $17 dollars (think my snipe was $80), sent the cards into PSA and they came back 5 7's, 2 8's and one 9, wow home run!!!! I continue to follow his auction to this day and have purchased many items outside of my expertise because I trust the grades he gives his raw cards. Plus he also charges fair shipping and ships the cards secure, both big plusses.
