It's too bad that CU has felt the need to go to these extremes to censure our indivudual perspectives and opinions by "cracking down" on dissention. Everyday, Across the Street is looking better and better to many of us who endure the growing oppresiveness here.
There are proper forums for political discussion. If you cannot find one, perhaps someone here can direct you. Many of the unmoderated discussion groups on the internet have been made useless by those who post political rants, endless watches for sale, obscene remarks, and the like.
The point of a discussion forum of this type is to discuss numismatics. CU has made a decision and I think the proper one.
<< <i>The point of a discussion forum of this type is to discuss numismatics. CU has made a decision and I think the proper one. >>
Agreed. Many boards do have specific, relatively narrow focus areas and I've never really understood why so many people think they should all be "almost anything goes" regardless of the topics being discussed. And then come the cries of "censorship" as if it's always horrible and un-American.
When I go to a coin forum, I want to talk about coins, not politics.
The next thing that will happen here is you will get banned because you have a open container next to your keyboard.
That's a bad idea, by the way. I dumped a beer on mine last night - no lie, it's still drying out.
I agree that politics and religion are often inextricably related to coins, but I guess the rules are the rules. At least there's still no dress code. Is there?
It shouldn't matter that politics and religion are part of coins, it is the way that people take things way too far with them. There is nothing about the current election that has anything to do with the coins but you can bet a lot of the whiners about being told not to talk politics would certainly be talking about it.
Same for religion.
People go way to far. If I don't invite you to my house, don't come knocking on my door spouting your beliefs. PCGS should be respected the same way....if you didn't get a hand-written invitation to join the forums, then leave the politics and religion outside and only come in if you can respect your host's requests.
I do laugh at those that are whining about this being against freedom of speech, etc etc etc. Folks, it isn't a government site. It is a site run by a private company. (sure, they are publicly traded....my point is there are not governmental).
<< <i>I guess total censorship should be next... Why does an individuals right to express their religious view in a

Carol has answered my question. And it seems members who are offended by my Lord Jesus Christ
will finally have a forum free from all self expression... Congrats to you all.

Since the CU forums are corporate-owned and sponsored, I can see their point on political posts. Let me make this very clear - I have no qualms about CU - it is the premier numismatic forum on the net, and I am proud to give my 2 cents worth here and give my feelings about what lurks about in the numsimatic world. I wouldn't be suprised that removing the politics from the forum helps keep the bandwidth needs down a little but also MIGHT remove CU from any potential legal ramifications.
As in, 'equal time' for candidates or we sue for it.
As others have said, it seems pretty darn simple: live by the rules set up, or you leave. It doesn't really matter if you agree with the rules or not. If people feel THAT strongly that the rules here aren't fair, they should go elsewhere.

So if a Jewish member had a sig line "Jesus Christ is a False Messiah" you would not be offended, or think that it would result in huge numbers of disruptive off topic posts, thus reducing the value of this message board to those wishing to discuss COINS?

Thanks for that Denga! I don't seek political intercourse here, but rather I recognize that any numismatic topic must certainly emanate from its political routes as no coin has ever been produced in this country without a political birth. I welcome the scrutiny and I welcome the discourse on the political nature of numismatics. I simply regret that CU shys away from this aspect of our hobby.
In a discussion forum about numismatics, unless you are blind, ignorant or moribund you can never divorce the political or religious nature of this discipline.
Cheers!
