Pete Rose or Barry Bonds ????

I love reading all the threads and posts by the members here.
One thing really confuses me, and some debate or discussion would be great.
Both Pete Rose and Barry Bonds have done some very nasty things in their life concerning Baseball
Both have made history with their accomplishments, Both were at the top, only to be crawling out of the gutter later
Both have denied the allegations, only to later be proven or suspected of being liars
So why so much Hobby Love for Pete Rose and so much hatred for Barry Bonds?
Seems like a double standard, why is this so?

Yes. but Rose placed huge gambling bets on Teams he was managing, do you not think he "cheated" as well in making managerial decisions during games that would benefit him personally?
Rose is a very sad individual to me, but an amazing ball player.
Bonds is a very arrogant individual to me. We all talk about how great he was before he "blew up," but he obviously felt very inadequate as a ball player.

I can't really speak on behalf of Rose, but Barry has always had a tendency to rub off on folks the wrong way.

I don't have the facts but I thought Pete only bet on his team to win. Even with that I guess greed could get in the way of proper judgement. In any case I like Pete because of his playing career and I am pretty sure he wasn't betting then.

i guess because barry just always acted like a pri ck towards everyone, fans, media, a whole generation of sportswriters will have to die off before he ever has a shot at the hall, but hes gonna boycott that anyways if i remember correctly, pete just got caught betting ,at least he fessed up to it, he'll probably never get in eitherthough, at least pete has a personality i guess i what im trying to say
I guess if Pete could go back and undo what he did, he would, he seems remorseful and sad.
Bonds on the other hand, seems to be in total denial, blaming everyone around him for his downfall. He needs to look in the mirror for the answers he is looking for, or for someone to blame.
He would still be hitting 30+ HRs at 45 if he was not ran out of baseball...... what a joke.
Rose was also great, and hustled more than anyone Ive seen, but his overall stats are more of a product of longevity.
<< <i> Barry is the second greatest hitter ever.... period! And easily the most feared hitter ever! Steroids didnt do it, hand eye and bat speed is all he needed. >>
Who is first, Pujols?
Bonds couldn't sniff Ruth, Williams or Cobb as a hitter.
What Barry Bonds is accused of has a direct bearing on the numbers he accumulated as a player, since they occured during his playing career. He was/is hugely unpopular, and treats fans like crap.

Fisticuffs.
Two men who had the world by the tail and blew it.
Charlie Hustle versus Barry Bonds.
Just when you thought Bonds head couldnt get any bigger, at 60ish, I think Rose could swell it even more.
Winner gets exactly what they deserve.
Nothing.

I remember listening to Hall of Famer and Cincinnati Reds radio announcer, Waite Hoyt, giving the play-by-play whenever Pete was in the lineup. How exciting it was to hear Waite describe those head-first slides of Pete.
Pete never stopped hustling throughout his entire playing career.
Waite Hoyt fought and overcame his own personal demon "alcohol addiction", but Pete never could defeat his "gambling addiction".
I think everyone wanted NOT to believe that Pete was guilty .... but his addiction just wouldn't let him come clean.
No one can dismiss Pete's MLB records .... especially 4256!
On the other hand, Barry Bonds was never really regarded highly by many other than Pirates/Giants fans.
I always thought Bonds had one of the best looking swings in MLB; 73 dingers Roids or no Roids is still pretty impressive!
But as mentioned by others, Bonds just wasn't personable enough with the right people to gain the love and respect he deserved.
It's sad because I think both of these guys, had they played their cards right (no pun intended), would definitely be Hall-of-Famers.
Funny how a switch can be thrown and everything changes in an instant!
Pete belongs in the Hall ..... the records that he holds as a player, most probably, will never be broken.
Cooperstown will never be complete until Pete Rose is inducted, IMHO

lol unlikely, quite unlikely.
Bonds put up his BEST seasons during his "old man" years. Definitely bogus stats. he may have hit 600 homers legitimately. Even before the records and the roid's he was a jackass. This just cements the deal.

I think this is the best answer so far. Most of the answers have been influenced by later years. Barry was never liked by the media (well before his head got big). What we think of most players is a reflection of what the media thinks.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
Rose played harder than any other human that ever touched a baseball. His desire and termination made him a HOF'er, not necassarily skill. If he had never bet on baseballl, he would stil be revered by all fans instead of a select few.
I have a 9 year old son that loves baseball and has a ton of talent. I have been making him watch films of Rose and David Eckstein to show him how the game should be played, with heart, hussle and determination. He is also a great pitcher at his age. I have been showimg him footage of Greg Maddux, one of my favs.
In other words, intellgence, drive and determination make a winner, not steroids.
Coaked in the few playoff he was in and was a lazy arrogant player. His lasting imagine to me was how he
was to lazy to run out every ground ball. The man holds no historical baseball memories to me.
Pete was the spark plug of some of the greatest teams in MLB history! The BIG RED MACHINE!
Rose and those World Series championships will ALWAYS be remember as some of the most exciting
and thrilling Series of all-time and one of the main reasons is the determination and hustle of Pete Rose.
His Records, charisma and the household knick name of "Charlie Hustle" are the stuff of Legends.
Bonds.... Come on... This loser never played with the determination to win. He never had what it took
to carry a team to legendary WS history. Ruth, Mantle and Cobb had it. Clemente, Reggie and Puckett had it
Many others had it. Rose definately had it! Bonds.. come on.. this clown couldn't carry Pete's jock strap and
it is an insult to even mention this baffoone in the same breath as Pete Rose.

i'm glad i'm not the only person who compares Eckstein to Rose

oh, you were serious.
Rose was doing something that no one else did for more than 50 years. Bonds was doing something that a high percentage of baseball players and other athletes were doing for several decades. Because of that, and because of how talented and unfriendly Bonds is, it is easy to see him representing the hundreds and thousands of drug using athletes, unlike Rose who is seen as an individual
Also, Rose is signing autographs every weekend, writing books, making TV and radio appearances; Bonds was extremely distant during his playing days and is now completely reclusive
