As the evactuations go from an informal recomendation to a mandatory order as of 8am Sunday morning lots of people are going to be bugging out in the path of Gustav which is 5mph short of bring a category 5. Here's hoping the coin collections are taken with them this time and not left behind to be "Katrinafied".

    Good luck to all of you! I spoke to a friend of mine on the telephone from Louisiana a couple of nights ago and he's getting braced for it-he only excpects rain, not the full force of the hurricane and does not have to evacuate.

    Scary, scary stuff.

  • This is looking like a bad one- thanks for the words of encouragement. On the plus side, most of us seem to have learned our lessons from Katrina- there is very little complacency this time around.

    I went and got my coins out of the SBD for the storm- I know that sounds crazy, but we've got a generator so we'll have air conditioning (window unit) regardless. If the bank is out of power for a few days I am sure their generator will be used for security- and I don't want my coins baking in the box.

    I'm sending the wife and kids to her Mom's house because we have a huge oak tree overhanging ours. Oh, yeah, and cleaning the "Chief's Special" and "Wingmaster" is also on the priority list.image

    Like last time, this is coming on a weekend. Worse though, this is a holiday weekend. No access to bank safe deposit boxes. One thing I worry about is the same as last time, that people will be stuck in traffic jams still when this comes ashore. The toll could mount there but hope not.

    Good reason to have a very good relationship with your local bank president, especially at a smaller bank. Back when I was growing up in IL, we had flooding and had a bad storm over a weekend. My parents placed a call to our bank prez and they were let in on the weekend to clear out the safety deposit box. Maybe that only works in small towns and small banks though?? Good reason to store things in waterproof containers inside the box as some have suggested on other threads.

    Anyways, good luck to all in the path and stay safe.

    Ironically, my cousin, whose house was destroyed by Katrina, was planning on moving into her new house in Bay St. Louis, MS this weekend. image

    I can't even begin to imagine. After years of living in a FEMA trailer, fighting with beaurucrats, insurance companies and crooked contractors to finally have your new house completed and now this happens. Unbelievable.

  • good luck Louisianans; get out while you can; help a neighbor if you can; be wise, be safe, be patient in traffic;

    take with you what you think you will need when you return, as it may not be there or usable when you come back;

    tent, tarps, generator, coolers, etc.; "extended" basic camping gear...

    This would be a really good reason for why I live in Colorado. I was in NO when Ivan failed to do what Katrina did. I was scared to death. How anyone can go through this year after year is totally beyond my comprehension.image

    I hope all goes well this time... I hate to see anyone in this kind of danger. One cannot fight nature, one can only prepare or avoid it. Cheers, RickO

    Well, I cancelled my listing and am hunkering down.

    A 6K Generator should help spare us from total darkness & oppressive heat,
    if we have enough fuel but even if we just run it every now & then it will be better
    than the alternative.

    Going nowhere and I'm sure we'll be fine despite having read the following:

    They're saying this one will be WORSE than Katrina!
