Anyone switch from Dansco to Intercept Shield Type Set Album?

Or vice versa? I have a completed type set in a Dansco that I've considered moving into an Intercept shield album mostly because Dansco's type album is getting more and more out of date, although if the coins will remain in their current state for longer in the intercept shield, all the better.

Anyone tried both and have some opinions they can share?

thanks!

I don't know if it's changed, but a few years ago the Intercept Shield albums were very poorly made and the pages would delaminate. Made in China, of course.

I have both. I have been a using Intercept products for 2x2, track box, Lincolns cents album and mint boxes, and have been happy.
Then Dansco came out with the silver-guard slip cases, that provides corrosion protection. I now have two Dansco albums.
I like the way the coins look in the Dansco better than the Intercept.

FYI you can buy the Intecept comic book holder/envelope, and make your own Intercept boxes.
Just use two side tape and cut the envelope up and line any coin storage box with it.

Don't you have to replace the Intercept Shield products every few years if you want to keep your coins in an inert environment?

Presumably, but that might also hold true for the Dansco sleeves (which I use).

Bummer that more people haven't responded, maybe the Intercept Shield Type Album is a clunker.

I saw a recent post with an Intercept Shield Type Set Album and liked the look.
Had a few more modern varieties.
Would like to see one w/ coins in person.
I like my 7070. Don't have the slip cover.

  • I suggest that Dansco start adding pages to their current 7070 - similiar to the way they handled the gold type set - the 7070 is already set up to accept addition pages and I see no reason why they cant add a page for early type coins, as well as, later modern coins i.e. prez's etc - this way you leave it to the collector what he wants in his 7070.

what I like about the Dansco 7070 - it's very durable - I cant tell you how many times Ive open my 7070 and it still looks new - dont like the sliding plastic - very concerned about scratching coins when inserting or taking out coins - wish they would come up with something different to prevent this from happening.

Intercept Shield products are supposed to be replaced every 10 years .... I don't know about albums, but I do use the Intercept Shield slab holders & boxes, especially for ASE's, with much success. No spotting or toning while surrounded by Inter. Shield Products.

It is certainly a lot less trouble, with less risk to the coins, to simply replace the Dansco sleeves, rather than pop all your coins out and switch Intercept albums (which I assume you have to do - I don't own any) every ten years. That's also assuming you remember to do so, and assuming the product is still available ten years down the line.

I'd mention cost, but that is hardly an issue with most die hard collectors image

for sets that i choose to save in folders i use the Intercept Shield albums for the opposite reasons that many opt for the Dansco: i place the coins in them to keep them stable, either white or as toned with no further progression. my pet peeve is with collectors that gfet all worked up about the AT issue and then knowingly place their coins in a contamination prone environment like the Dansco, but i guess to each their own. the two products suffer from the same thing regarding the plastic slides and while the Intercept Shield albums slowly lose the ability to preserve a stable capsule around each coin, the Dansco slowly releases the chemicals that tone coins to become more stable.

somewhere down the road they become equal i suppose.

My icon should tell you... I like Danscos.

I do have one set in an Intercept. It's the coins I'm trying to keep from toning anymore.

I use Dansco, I do not really care about the protection though. I enjoy getting in expensive mint sets and pulling pocket change so nothing in my Danscos are that valuable and if they tone all the better.

Wayne Herndon's been pushing the Intercept Shield albums of late, vis a vis they're supposedly more of a stable environment than a Dansco. But I had heard of Barry's opinion before, about the delamination of the Intercept Shield albums, and would be curious to hear more discussion.

Any further thoughts on this? My own experience tells me coins kept carefully in a Dansco in a STABLE environment, do NOT tone (exceptionally sensitive coins like ASEs would be an exception, those tone in airtites and slabs, too!)

Frankly, I'd rather have the USA-made Dansco line than delaminating, China-made Intercept shield albums. Case closed, for my part.

Well, I didn't switch from, but decided to use the IS album vice the Dansco.

I made this post a while back.... Link to IS album discussion

Pictures and discussion of what I like about and dislike about it. Also some excel spreadsheets to keep up to date with your album. Can't remember who's spreadsheet I used to modify to make the IS version, but I'm pretty sure I gave him credit for it in the post.

Thanks for the reply! I was starting to think no one cared about the topic at all. image

I care deeply. I want to get a Frankie half album and have been stumped. I started a thread about this and all I got was referrals to a member that sells IS albums. I just want to hear personal experiences with the two

My personal take (as you've prob noted) is, I prefer the Dansco. The reasons are several:

    aesthetically, Dansco is just better.

Archival? I don't care, intercept shield. Do you think Wayte Raymond, Library of Coins, etc (great albums from the past) were? Yet sometimes coins can remain brilliant, or, they can tone in them. Far more important than the album, is common sense care where the album is stored. How about original bankwrapped rolls? Paper on those ain't archival, but they come brilliant.

Lack of air exposure is key, and a properly used album has that covered. Main thing is NO pvc, none of the current top albums have that. A new Dansco slipcase helps keep atmospheric effects away as well.

Last point, US made vs. China-made. Not to cast aspersions, but I'd sooner trust in the US-made Dansco not to leach something chemical onto my coins, vs. the China-made IS album. Note Barry reported awhile ago about the delaminating issue with IS albums. Don't know if they've addressed that, but I'm not gonna use my $$ to find out.
  • Here's the excel sheets for download, from the originals by Offmetal for the Dansco album I believe:
    IS album with gold
    IS album without gold
And here are the pictures for ease of reference. Hope no one minds that I reposted part of an old thread here, easier than looking for the old one.
