Nice job! You should do well with most of those tougher cards. The Bakken and Otto seem especially hard to find nice.
Jason, That's a sweet Namath card. The focus is always an issue on that card. Your's looks pretty sharp. Was that an ebay purchase or private purchase?
Wow, just posted the cards to my set (27th) and didn't realize how low each were.
#183 is a pop. 1 of 1 with none graded higher, Bergey#155 and Bakken#214 only have 19 and 12 8's with none higher. I pulled the Bakken from a wax pack I opened around 6 years ago. The other 3 cards (#27, 221 and 258) only have 12 to 14 8's with one higher. Nice early bday present to me from PSA
If you look at VCP it is the cheapest one listed off ebay. Got lucky I guess! It is very nice but my 6 I am selling is very strong for the grade as well.

Ive been following this thread for a bit now, but never had the time to hop in here yet. One of the GREATEST Football sets of my childhood. The 1971 TOPPS FOOTBALL SET! Ive owned this set for over 30 years and can not ever seeing myself not owning these cards. Just in the last couple of years I got baited into having my raw set graded. I stared out with PSA and then decided to cross my set to SGC.
Im trying to make a 88 (PSA 8) or better set and we all know how tough graders are on this highly condition sensitive set. While it is easy to get caught up in the set registry thing, my main motivation is just having nice cards from my childhood and not so much any of the monatary reasons or registry standings. I prefer to collect the cards and not just labels.
Imagine if the Roger Staubach Rookie would have been in the 71 set instead of the 72 set! That would make it the greatest set of ALL-TIME! Yes Im a big Cowboy fan and do consider the 72 set the granddaddy of all the seventies sets for its inovative sub-set like the first league leader cards and Pro-Action Cards, as well as the Third series All-Pro Cards. BUT for sheer beauty and design the 71 set can't be beat. Both are my all-time favorites.
Here is my latest pick up to have crossed (Thanks to Mike(Shouldabeena10)
90% of my collection is raw (Complete Football Sets 1970-1989), and will always remain that way. After 30 years of building these sets multiple times, I finally fell prey to the TPG. I decided to do my two all-time Favorites. The 1971 and 1972 Topps Sets. I started submitting my 72 set first. I eventually got fustrated by the inconsistant grading from PSA. That was not the main reason as ALL TPGer's will have some consistantcy issues just for the fact that grading is ALWAYS going to be subjective no matter the TPG.
I love football and its history and the joy and happiness these cards brang me during my childhood. Naturally everybody likes to think their cards are worth a monatary value, but if they all became worthless tommorrow I would be collecting them just the same. Im not concerned with labels, price guides and registry standing as much as I am about obtaining the nicest cards I can afford and for my two childhood sets.
Everybody has a personal choice in what and how they collect. Some Collect Flips, Some collect prices. Some collect what others tell them to. Its everyone's own personal choice. Me... I collect cards and I personally feel I get a more accurate, consistant and Superior product with SGC. I just feel PSA has been forced to hire on very inexperienced graders and their product has suffered. Here is a perfect example on a 71 Larry Csnoka. A real beauty! Perfect centering, Sharp corners and the over all eye appeal I look for in a card before deciding to add it to my set. I was very disappointed to recieve the card only to find the wax stain on the back. How does that not get noticed? Simply turning the card over is all that would be required. To some its not a big deal, but the card is unqualified to be in my set and it sure won't cross to SGC.
Anybody need a Csonka for their Registry set? $25 postage paid and I can hook you up with this card. Other than the wax the card is a dead on beauty.
This was one reason I have not jumped in this 71 post sooner. I DO NOT want this to be a PSA/SGC thing. Both are the best the hobby has to offer and we all have to make a choice. Im only interested in the history and discussion of the beautiful 1971 Topps Football card Set, Weatrher you collect it Raw, PSA, SGC, BGS...etc is your own personal choice. Either way you have already made the most important choice. Collecting the 1971 Topps Football Set!
Hi John... I love the '71's with the SGC black borders! I have about 67% of a '71 set with a gpa of 7.05.. I have been slowly piecing this set together over the past 2 years.. Most of these cards I have picked up for under $5 on ebay.. It's a work in progress. I have another 40 raw cards that are all psa 7 or better than can move me up to about 85% complete. At $6 a pop this month I should send them in but I have about 15 other stacks of cards that could go in too.. Tough choices! I have a 1970 football glossy set and a 1971 kelloggs football set that are SGC graded. They look so nice with those black borders! Thanks for sharing all the scans.. You have some BEAUTIFUL cards ! If you want to crack the Csonka and remove the wax give me a holler. I have the perfect way to remove the wax from the front or back without any problems...and it doesn't involve panty hose!! Take care and best of luck with your set! Paul
I have the 70 glossy set and Kellogg set as well as a set of the 71 Game cards, all raw sets. I never have gotten around to the 71 kellogg set. I always seem to be chasing the Game cards and a few of the posters from the 71 set. congratulations on closing in on a beautiful 71 set. I have a few extra 71's $6.00 each for the 7's $8.00 each for the 8's couple bucks S/H
Hi John... Seems like you and I have some of the same interests. I have the top '71 topps poster set and '71 topps game set on the psa registry boards. I have lots of extra game cards and posters if you are still looking for something in particular. I have thought of doing both sets in SGC holders too but that would be somewhere down the road so I've kept many nice raw ones just in case I want to take the plunge into some SGC sets. I also have a cherry '70 kelloggs football set that should really go to psa/sgc someday but it looks great raw and psa 9's commons are worth $5 or so. Tough to send a card off for $6 when it is only worth $5 when it comes back. I took a look at your extra '71's and I have them all either graded or raw and ready to go to psa. Thanks for the offer!
Hey guys, I just listed a 71 Topps #233 Lemar Parrish PSA 8. As most of you know, this is a low pop card and none have been graded higher. Here is a link if anyone is interested. PSA 8 1971 Lemar Parrish
great cards John, really nice. I don't mind SGC at all but once I start a registry or get cards in bulk in one holder I tend to stick with it. I am doing a 63 Fleer BB set in SGC and they don't come up that often is the main issue.

Well, I grabbed Vincent's Lemar Parrish PSA 8, so I've got a PSA 7 available if anyone needs it for $22.50 dlvd via 1st Class Mail w/ DC (VCP is $20). Drop me a PM.
Hi Guys I have a nearly complete raw set i have been working on for a few years... Some of the cards I have upgraded a number of times. the cards in the set are typically nm to nm/m+. I know there are a number of 8s hiding in there. I was thinking about sending some in on the group submission for 4.50 each. Besides hofers, what cards are worth grading in an 8 for resale purposes? I see a list of lower pop cards earlier in this thread but it's over a year old, I suppose it's still close. I saw lemar parrish is a toughie. whats it worth in 8?
John, I found the Lemar Parrish to be extremely tough, and was the last card I needed to complete my set. Other than the obvious low pop cards, I'm having a tough time finding a #52 Cas Banaczek. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places, but can't seem to find one. John G
My set finally hit over 70%!!! It is tough sledding for this issue. It sucks when most dealers want 15$ for 8's and 10$ for 7's when trying to put together this issue. You can pick up any other 70s set much cheaper IMO than 71 FB including BB as far as commons go.
I hope to be finished by the end of the year but it will be close. I average 2 cards a week but sometimes I get 0 cards as there are alot of cards that don't show up very often anywhere (hence I guess the higher prices from dealers ).
I am almost through upgrading the 6s and one 5 I had when I bought the first big lot.
Goal is to have every HOFer or listed card in SMR in a PSA 8 and overall set grade 7.5 or higher.
I like the Nitsche that BMW has listed, pipe dream boys.

Morgoth.. Yes I was down to 2 cards for my 1971, set #28 Lionel Aldridge which I picked up in the auction Tuesday and I STILL NEED #138 PAUL GUIDRY!! I actually bid about $350 and was STILL OUTBID!! I'm down to my last card!! I posted a few threads a while ago here looking for a PSA 8 Guidry..but no luck,,, I wish I could find the last card I need and start a new set
Hey jhs127 sorry about your luck on the Guidry. I think you might have lucked out and will get yours cheaper. I say with 1 card left you can certainly start a new set. I am already getting a few cards for my next set. 1964 Philadelphia. I looked at my high end raw and no Guidry to submit.
I really love the set and have some doubles in 7 and 8 if anyone needs some let me know. I need to go through the whole set as i always end up buying some I actually have or find ones not registered.

Morgoth..Hopefully I can get the Guidry cheaper... I was going to start another set (Thurman Munson set), but some unexpected home projects are going to push it back a while. I might do a 1st year Oakland Raiders (1960) set..there should only be about 15-20 cards.
I started with Team sets and built the 1961 Pirates, 1972 Pirates and 1980 Pirates Team sets both raw and graded (I need to update the sets with all the cards I have bought recently).
I always stated I would never try and do a full Topps set due to the size of the project. I was able to purchase over 25% of this set graded at one time so that convinced me to finish it. I am down to under 30 cards but I need to actually sort them again to see if I have any unregistered cards laying around.
I will never do any set over 300 cards and would prefer them to be uner 150 but the 64 Philly set is really nice and not to expensive. I am thinking 54 Bowman fb next.

Yes..I've bid on the PSA 7 Guidry. Don't really want a 7 since the whole set is Graded 8..but don't have much choice at this point. Unless another PSA 8 surfaces......
It appears some of the bulk submitters have found their way to 71 FB. I hope it blows up some of the low pop cards enough so I don't have to pay 100 bucks for common 8's. I still need Jim Butler.

Have you guys had any issues with minsize rqmt when you sub 71's. I have subbed and resubbed several cards from different sources and they keep coming back as minsize. It's driving me nuts...
3 days for a 262 card submission to pop, can't complain about that or the grades. I was hoping for 8's on Guidry, Turner, and Hardman, ended up .5 better on the three.

Awesome work! You're almost there with your '71 set! I am at about 75% right now (Memories Galore) and somewhere around 17th-19th place on the registry! I have been buying nice looking psa 7 commons on ebay for 3-5 bucks a pop for the past 3 years and have about 60 cards to go. I have 40 of the cards I need in near mint/mint shape that I need to send in when the next $5 special rolls around. I'm doing all the commons and semi-stars first and the STARS last! This is the first year I collected cards and Alan Page is my favorite card in the set! Paul
Just a heads-up for anyone interested...I have decided to retire my 1971 Topps Football card set (John Giampa Collection), and will be selling it as team sets on eBay. The first few team sets are posted, with more to follow. It was a very fun set to build with some very tough cards. I'm ready to start working on my next set.
Hello What happened to all of the 1971 football set postings? Did everyone retire? This is an awesome set I stated collecting earlier this year. I was looking at the POP report for 1971 football PSA 10s. 30,000+ cards graded with only 26 PSA 10s WOW! Does anyone know who has any of these 1971 football PSA 10s? I would be interested in purchasing! Thanks Kevin 1-916-275-2897 elitecards@hotmail.com

To some its not a big deal, but the card is unqualified to be in my set and it sure won't cross to SGC.
Anybody need a Csonka for their Registry set? $25 postage paid and I can hook you up with this card. Other than the wax
the card is a dead on beauty.
This was one reason I have not jumped in this 71 post sooner. I DO NOT want this to be a PSA/SGC thing.
Both are the best the hobby has to offer and we all have to make a choice.
Im only interested in the history and discussion of the beautiful 1971 Topps Football card Set, Weatrher you collect
it Raw, PSA, SGC, BGS...etc is your own personal choice. Either way you have already made the most important
choice. Collecting the 1971 Topps Football Set!
A few more from my set:
John
I never have gotten
around to the 71 kellogg set. I always seem to be chasing the Game cards and a few of the posters from the 71 set.
congratulations on closing in on a beautiful 71 set. I have a few extra 71's $6.00 each for the 7's $8.00 each for the 8's
couple bucks S/H
Take Care
John
Here is a link if anyone is interested.
PSA 8 1971 Lemar Parrish
March up to the first page of 1971 Set Registry
I shipped it out yesterday, so you should get it pretty soon.
Thanks
Vince
I have several PSA 7 71s on E-Bay right now, most for 4.95. Also I have a bunch of PSA 8 OC laying around if anyone is interested for cheap.

I have a nearly complete raw set i have been working on for a few years...

HOF SIGNED FOOTBALL RCS
I hope to be finished by the end of the year but it will be close. I average 2 cards a week but sometimes I get 0 cards as there are alot of cards that don't show up very often anywhere (hence I guess the higher prices from dealers ).
I am almost through upgrading the 6s and one 5 I had when I bought the first big lot.
Goal is to have every HOFer or listed card in SMR in a PSA 8 and overall set grade 7.5 or higher.
I like the Nitsche that BMW has listed, pipe dream boys.
I listed some 71 7s and 8s , they end on sunday, including a centered psa 7 Namath. here they are:

Did anyone catch that final price on that #138 Paul Guidry? Over $330 bucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOW.
I won 17 cards in total. I am at almost 90% complete.
I posted a few threads a while ago here looking for a PSA 8 Guidry..but no luck,,,
I wish I could find the last card I need and start a new set
jhs127
I really love the set and have some doubles in 7 and 8 if anyone needs some let me know. I need to go through the whole set as i always end up buying some I actually have or find ones not registered.
I collect the '71 topps football poster inserts! Does anyone have some nicely centered ones with sharp corners?
Paul
I was going to start another set (Thurman Munson set), but some unexpected home projects are going to push it back a while.
I might do a 1st year Oakland Raiders (1960) set..there should only be about 15-20 cards.
Unless another PSA 8 surfaces......
It's driving me nuts...

Are any for sale?
I could use the Ken Ellis for my Packers team set.
If it's available, please pm me a price, thanks.
I have 2 more coming in and found 2 more on a guys website so by the end of the week I should be down to 22 cards in total I need.
I got the Charlie Sanders this week and it was the last "name" card I needed. The rest are low pop commons.
Paul
