¿What Do You Use To Get The Coin Out of The Dirt?

SaorAlbaSaorAlba Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭✭✭
One of the problems I am encountering in finding coins during digs, is having to go through the dirt to find them, does anyone have any suggestions on something to use as a sifter, and where can something like that be found?

  • t most of us have is a "hand held pinpointer".
I have the one from Harbor Freight: http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php?topic=155621.0

From that unit the $$$ goes UP! ! ! too almost $200.00 Dollars.

    Google search: hand held pinpointer

    Good Luck

As COC said, a pinpointer is very helpful... I have the Bullseye (White's product) and the DX-1 (Sunray)..... my preference is the DX-1... However, first priority is 'have a pinpointer'... Cheers, RickO

Mark I Model 1965 human hand (right).

After cutting the sod with a 3-in-1 or "Hori-Hori" knife or a shovel, of course.

An electronic pinpointer is a VERY nice tool to have, as Jerry said. I did without one for years, but now I feel naked without one.

Admittedly I didn't even know such an animal existed.

I have gained experience with using the detector and am better at isolating, but lots of my finds so far have been in grass roots, a total pain. Now to add insult to injury, the bleeping dog has been going out and re-excavating the dig sites in the backyard. image

  • If you search ebay " metal detector scoop" price range from $20-$65 works great on beachs as well.
  • If you are cheap like me,
And go to the beach. I used a Maxwell house coffee canister, the new plastic ones. with holes drilled in the bottom. it worked pretty well for the dry beach sand. Not so well for the wet. It would dig the wet sand OK but not sift.
(Old man) Look I had a lovely supper, and all I said to my wife was, “That piece of halibut was good enough for Jehovah”.

(Priest) BLASPHEMY he said it again, did you hear him?
  • use a garden type trowel in the parks and yards....check out home depot and buy the sturdiest one they have....i know rtgstore.com has very dependable trowels for about 10 bucks......if you are going to the beach a sifter type scoop will work well , or try lonleyp's great idea with the coffee jug....a pin pointer is nice but not mandatory.....at the parks, dig a plug with your trowel and place the plug/soil on the frisbee/towel....bring a frisbee or a towel with ya in the parks to place the soil you dig on....that way it's easy to make sure all the soil that came out of the hole gets back in the hole.......shuffle through the dirt with your fingers and retrieve your target....always fill the hole, park or beach...good luck and hh

  • The frisbee is an excellent idea. I think I will start using one for my yard digs. As far as the beach is concerned I use this:

I have a scoop like the one pictured above for the sand.
I use a Vibro-probe for the "sod" finds.
  • anything plastic and STURDY at the same time is good, that way you can wave the coil over the plastic scoop and know if it is in there. I sometimes use a gold pan that has a square mesh pattern to sift with

Bingo! That is what I was thinking of initially, but I like the pinpointer idea also.

I really like the V probe because I wear headphones plus the auto on/off works out great for me.
  • Here's what I use....

The digger is over 20 years old now......and I have recently (last year) started using a pin pointer (Tiny-Tec)..which, no matter what brand, sure makes finding the target a lot easier.
