<< <i>Since 3/4 of ALL transactions on EBAY are concluded with PayPal, not "utilizing" PP is not really a viable option for most sellers. >>

But not utilizing Ebay certainly is... >>

I think that what I've learned from this thread and others like it is that now would be (or it still is) a good time to short eBay stock. All these moves seem like desperate reactions to a market that wants to see earnings growth. eBay is going to wring out every penny they can until they've squeezed their own business to death.

It has been my most agressive position for more than a year.

BUT, the risk of a buyout or a PayPal spinoff is keeping me
    cautious about adding new money.

EBAY should be trading well below $10, and only their smoke-and-mirrors
game has propped the thing up. I know for certain that while GS has told
account-holders that EBAY is "probably OK," their own trading desks have
huge short-positions; some are just trades, but MANY are CORE positions.

A new Winnebago is paid for, IF I cover now, or I can let it ride and buy
    a BIGGER/BETTER one..........OR, maybe, I lose it all on a buyout/spinoff.

I would not suggest that shorting it here is a slam-dunk. I would be
cautious below $30. It's probably safe here, but I ain't sure.

MSFT and GOOG both know that EBAY is in deep trouble. They also
know that EBAY is operating as a "product search engine," that both
would like to own. GOOG would also love to have PP, if they could get
it cheap. GOOG and MSFT could teamup, buy the thing and split it up:
MSFT takes the EBAY platform, GOOG takes PP. That is the ONLY
genuine risk to maintaining a longterm SHORT position.

If you cull out the buy.com listings from the total counts, you will
see that listings are in the toilet. And, buy pays no listing-fees,
until items are sold. Their SellThroughRate is less than 3%.

How is the Paypal DC any different that the USPS.com or Automated Postal Center DC? After I print the label it all goes into the same mailbox.

Only the USPS-vended DC ticket is routinely scanned on acceptance.

    There is no other difference.

The "scanning issues" spawned a whole cottage industry on EBAY.

  • Ok, this is just getting stupid.

The buyer just sent me an email sent to him by Paypal. Basically they told him that his word he recieved the items as was very happy with the transaction is not enough to free the money. They also refuse to tell him why it was reversed.

Here's what we do. Pay our Ebay fees with a credit card, other than Paypal or Ebay. Then we contact the credit card company and get the payment reversed!
    That'll learn em!

I'm sorry to hear about this ordeal you've had to go through, Leiascards. I hope it gets resolved in your favor ASAP.

This is why in a previous thread I stated that even sellers who follow the rules will get screwed, a point with which you strongly disagreed.

Unfortunately, it appears this point has been proven after all.

If you accept paypal, you are basically willing to risk losing that $$, even if the item is delivered, which is why I would NEVER accept Paypal for a big ticket item anymore.

I still accept Paypal only even on high dollar items to me there is just as much if not more recieving check or money orders. Popular belief is that checks take about 10 days to clear. This is true in most cases, but they can still bounce up to 30 days later. I know I have 3 still on file at the restaurant that bounced after 10 days. The most common payment scam right now is Money Orders.

Money orders and checks are still MUCH safer than Paypal these days. I've never heard firsthand of a single problem with a check or money order, but I've heard of MANY recent problems with paypal payments, such as yours. A fake money order can usually be spotted very easily, by you or the bank. You seem to have an inordinate amount of bad luck with bounced checks, too. I've had a total of ONE check bounce (within a week) out of about 500 or more I've accepted from buyers on ebay.

Leia, What's the scam with money orders?
  • Fake Western Union Money orders are very big right now. These are next to impossible to spot. There are reports all over Ebay and the internet of them getting cashed and then up to a month later the bank is wanting their money back because they were fake. Because of this my bank holds ALL money orders 10 business days and the local PO rarely cashes USPS money orders over 25.00.

Anyway I recieved this lettter from Paypal this morning on the matter at hand.

Thank you for providing information about the recent bank reversal. We have reviewed the information and determined that you will not be held liable for this reversal because you followed the guidelines of the . Any funds that may have been temporarily held are now available in your account.

    Good.

As much as I hate PP, we now have yet another instance of PP
honoring the SP, based on a seller "following the rules."

Good for PayPal, but more importantly, GOOD FOR YOU! I think your experience had us all more than a little worried.
